Our mayor and two of our female city council members have been recalled.
Yesterday a group that is funded by rich developers were successful in getting enough signatures on petitions to recall two female city council people and our female mayor who shut down our town for a few weeks and required masks. They sold it as "taking back our town from the radical left who want to defund our police". They were going door to door scaring the crap out of old people. They hired political operatives who have worked for the Koch boys. They paid out of town people a fee for each signature they collected. One of the people who funded it is a large developer who did not get a large arena project he wanted and other things he thinks are holy, like making money off poor people. This has totally divided our town and made it dangerous to even support our Mayor.
I mean this, the use of "defund the police" is going to be our undoing. They are using the same thing to go after another college town like ours in our state. I really hate that we have been painted with a "hate the police" label. I don't hate the police, I just want them to be fair and get rid of the bad ones, stop the militarization of the police and give more funding to drug rehab and mental health.
This is a bright red state, our little city has been a breath of fresh air with this mayor and council. These people used the police to go out and canvass (in plain clothes but armed). The police protected their pop up tents all over town.
We are the only city with a liberal mayor in the entire state. Now we have to raise money for a new election to fight for her. I don't think we can out raise these rich assholes.

Isn't what the police did illegal? Going door to door that way with a petition? I know very well though in red states laws mean nothing if the laws don't benefit old white males.
