(Firefox is a web browser)
An endangered internet species: Firefox
Firefox is in real danger of dying off. Firefox is on its way to irrelevance.
By July 2012, Firefox's market share was retreating from its all-time high mark of 23.75%.
By March 2020, Firefox had dropped to a mere 3.6%.
As of Aug. 14, 2020, only a few months later, it's shrunk down even more to a paltry 3.3%.

(113,947 posts)So, I have to keep two other browsers as back-up--three if you count Safari on my iphone/ipad.
DU threads now have formatting issues on FIrefox that don't show up on Chrome or Edge. So, I'm about to lose patience with it.
I don't have a lot of trust in Chrome, especially because of Google and I've never been able to get it customized the way I want it. And Edge is also questionable, though I find it less buggy so there is that.
What are others using?
I have to run some things in Chrome, because Firefox is such a mess, lately. Which is a damn shame, because I don't like Chrome. I also use the Brave browser. It runs on a Chrome platform, but supposedly far less invasive than Chrome. I am not completely sold on it, but the way Firefox is going, it's probably not going to be long before I make a permanent leap over there.

(42,862 posts)That's sad... I prefer Firefox over Chrome because of the "plug-in's" and other add-ons... which appear to be unique to Firefox, and which are not also available on other browsers.
There's one I like (that my son showed me) called WEAlias. It lets me create text "alias" names that I can type in to the browser's address line (instead of clicking a bookmark, and instead of typing the full URL.)
There's something similar for Chrome, but it's clunky and not as clean.
What is the market share of Internet Explorer? (or "Edge"... which sounds like a men's shaving product.)
I consider chrome to be unsecured because it will not allow me to run plug ins from my Internet security program that blocks malicious links and ads. Chrome throws the baby out with the bath water on security which is why I use Firefox

(42,862 posts)I have "Ad Block Plus" as an add-on for both Firefox and Chrome, BUT... the same add-on (with the same settings) seems to work better in Firefox. Also, I like the way "Honey" and "Wikibuy" work better in Firefox.
Only Facebook works better (for me) in Chrome.
My anti-virus (Avast) seems to integrate well in both. The Avast password vault works seamlessly in both, and its ability to stop malicious sites and code-embedded images (and other pfishing-sites)

(7,400 posts)I'm not partial to any except that I hate IE with a passion. I almost never hop on internet in my Win 95, it's just too old and slow - but the old Firefox it can handle is still supported so I keep it.

(24,259 posts)using a Mozilla browser eons ago when I started with Netscape, switched to Phoenix, then Firebird and then finally Firefox. It's been my main 'go to' but I've also used pretty much every browser over the years especially when, up to a few years ago, I set up and was running websites or helping others do so. Hopefully they'll be able to turn things around so it will be even better then the competition soon.

(43,273 posts)I currently use four different bowsers but use Firefox 95% of the time. What I like about Firefox and SeaMonkey is you can tweak then real easy with about:config . It's not so easy with the others.

But I stopped using it when it would constantly freeze up my iMac, so I switched to Safari.

(15,909 posts)Like others have said, I mainly use it because of the plugins.
When I'm developing web applications I use Chrome most of the time because of Chrome's reputation for standards compliance, plus I like its built-in developer tools best. I test my work on Firefox and Safari, and even now and then on defunct Internet Explorer too, but most of the time I'm running on Chrome.
Recently, however, I've run into a few glitches that only happened in Chrome, where the same code worked fine in Firefox and Safari. And as for speed, I've created some pretty calculation-intense JavaScript and the performance is just fine with Firefox, regardless of the purported speed advantages of Chrome.

(4,475 posts)Safari is first. Second is Chrome. If neither of those works then firefox.
In 4th place used to be IE, but I haven't needed to go that far down the ladder in a few years.

Chrome is perhaps one of the most fugazi browsers out there and opens you to vulnerabilities.
