A Republican lawmaker called for Americans to exhibit personal responsibility to fight the COVID-19 pandemic while arguing it is the job of private businesses and individuals, not lawmakers and public servants, to implement health policy.
The remarks, by Rep. Jim Cox, R-Berks, came at the end of a three-hour-long hearing on the states beleaguered unemployment compensation system.
Cox, chairman of the House Labor and Industry Committee, then spoke for almost ten minutes, arguing that Gov. Tom Wolfs administration could not be solely focused on public safety as the driving force behind the decisions we in government are making.
Government reminders of the best ways to prevent the flu, such as sneezing into your elbows, were all good and fine, Cox said.
But, its not the governments responsibility to pass mandates, to pass orders, to try to keep us safe.

Perhaps a civics course should be a requirement to hold office. I have to take many different courses to maintain my employment.

(12,712 posts)Where was he when they were passing the Patriot Act to do purportedly do exactly the opposite of what he is saying? Ah, keep us safe from them tairerists!!!
What an idiot. He has no idea what he is talking about. We have a government to act IN OUR BEHALF on larger issues that require coordination and our mutual support via taxation. The government is responsible to us as a whole.
He is just making an excuse for bad governing, malfeasance and failure to fulfill the oaths of office taken.
Neoliberal economics wouldn't even allow for general benefit without a good profit motive. Let it all go to hell and make some money on the leftovers, if possible.
