Oleander is extremely toxic and potentially fatal. Major toxicity reports include disturbances in heart rhythm and death. Signs of toxicity include severe nausea, emesis, abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, hyperkalemia, hypertension, lethargy, hepatotoxicity, and nephrotoxicity. Oleander intoxication can negatively impact the lungs, kidneys, spleen, and muscle tissue. Intoxication can occur from ingestion, or from inhalation of smoke from burned plants.

(31,261 posts)but dont know what the plant looks like.
I read an article earlier this week where people were consuming FULL strength essential oils like Tea Tree Oil and Yang-Ylang. That is Fing insane. I would not even consume heavily diluted Tea Tree Oil, but it is great for some topical uses in diluted form.

The area I live in is like Jurrasic Park. For gawd's sake, there are small lizzards in my yard!

Hell, I put big rubber boots on to walk out in yard. It's like living in Jurrasic Park here. I have small lizzards & weird bugs in yard.

I don't quite understand their popularity in Florida, unless you wanna grow something poisonous.
Seems like they are hardy to about 10 degrees.

(18,828 posts)I got a little ways down the road and say this teeny tiny little lizard clinging to the hood. Pulled over and tried to catch him. He ended up on my shirt but I was able to coax him to jump on to a shrub.

(26,168 posts)Oleander is a favorite of mine, but we just couldn't do it. The dogs can't be trusted not to find a dead stick, and we have nieces and nephews who have started having babies. The risk of those children randomly chewing on the leaves was too great. All of our hedges and yard plants are non-toxic because you never know.
That Needy Amin is suggesting a toxic common yard plant as a Covid cure makes my blood run cold. That he's suggesting a toxic plant that grows rampant in the South is just dumb. Go for your base again, dude.
It's fairly well known that oleander is poison. Here's hoping local people warn one another enough to stop tragedy.

(80,467 posts)I'm wondering if putin's "vaccine" is oleander based. 🤬
I hope people know better!
Even the pollen is super toxic. Why would anyone sell such a plant?

(15,526 posts)... in my grandfather's back yard! That pic certainly looks a lot like them, based on my memory as a kid.
He always had a big garden of vegetables (after selling his farm to move to a suburb), but also those pink flowers that were almost like a "privacy fence" between him and the neighbor property.
They never made me ill, as far as I know, but it's not like I lingered around them either.
Edit: Just read that they're indeed used as privacy fences by some people.
Thanks for the warning, gramps! What if me and my cousins had put those flowers in our mouths like dumb kids might do?

Some lazy idiot cut down his Oleanders and rather than dispose of them via the Trash, dumped them in a Neighbors Pasture and Cows will eat these suckers like Chocolate. This neighbor lost all Eight of his Cows with in less than a day.

(34,295 posts)I kinda doubt this will go anywhere. I have no idea if Trump even used the word oleander in a sentence or anything. He didn't tweet anything about it. And this meeting happened in July. (Which is a million years ago in Trump's universe)
The only source is Axios. There is no evidence that Trump is promoting it. He probably doesn't know what it is.

(151 posts)Scanned several articles, none of which mention toxicity of the plant. One supposes that the extract, oleandrin, might or might not be toxic, But anyone who hears the news, and equates the plant to the extract... damnit! Why the hell are people people acting like its two centuries ago, listening to the traveling quacks and their supposed cures... and five more months before we can get the gullible liar himself out of power...
