Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Republican John Kasich trade barbs before they both speak at the Democr
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparred with Ohio's former Republican governor, John Kasich, before both are slated to speak at the Democratic National Convention.
Kasich told Buzzfeed News that Ocasio-Cortez doesn't represent the Democratic party and that her voice is exaggerated by the media.
Ocasio-Cortez hit back at Kasich in a set of tweets on Monday, arguing that while she hopes Kasich convinces other Republicans to vote for Biden, he's "an anti-choice extremist" and "is not a friend to workers."
Shortly before both are slated to speak at the Democratic National Convention, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called John Kasich "an anti-choice extremist" in response to an interview in which the former Republican governor from Ohio criticized the congresswoman.
get 60 seconds. Not much but can be a powerful and even fun message in that 60 seconds. I hope she uses it well as a member of the democratic party that is celebrating our nominee for President of the U.S.
Kaisch is there in redemption.
Two different animals.
And this helps keep him in the limelight as well as maybe get some support among Dems for his candidacy two years from now when he begins actively running. He is not there for redemption. He is there for himself.
because of the Democrats
I dont care whether Kaich and Ocasio-Cortez spar, the only thing I care about is what will help us win in November
He is hoping Trump loses like Goldwater did in 1964 and then a moderate like Nixon comes in and wins the nomination like Nixon did in 1968.
The entire Party will never forgive him for that. Even if they nominate a moderate, they could never forgive him for going to ouur convention. It would be like us forgiving Joe Liberman for speaking at their convention.
for Republicans standing up and saying Trump is all wrong in every way and they feel the shame letting him do what he has done to our country and the constitution and breaking our laws.
Theyre both right...
...and they both need to STFU. At least for now.
while his party is waging war on democracy, decency and truth
He's going to tell our AOC if she represents the party or not? Fuck him and the rest of his billionaire buddies.
You might want to remember which of the 2 is the Democrat btw.
So he can go fuck right off. One would think that DU would support the Dem over the not-Dem.
independents in Ohio to vote for Biden/Harris
If we took Ohio, the election is over
We are putting as many irons into the fire as possible. This election is too important
So we're just going with the Republican over the Democrat in this one.
There's my reservations about Kasich justified right there.
it is shameful, and (and I try to hardly ever get involved in this) seems to clearly be against TOS. Not only is is attacking (passive aggressively and/or indirectly or not) but is is using a fucking RW Rethug forced birther union buster as the virtual cudgel.
That fucker Kasich kicked it all off to boot. I think he is a goddamn Trojan horse (at least on the congressional side in terms of the vote).
Of course the whole flap is her fault. Women are expected by some people to just shut up and smile, when men denigrate them. Especially young women.
Instead of trying to woo people who would rather stick a hot poker in their eyes than vote Democratic.
They want unity? Try uniting the DEMOCRATIC PARTY first.
shouldn't have been invited to speak either.
Weird concept on Democratic Underground, but...
Seriously? That is your position on this?
in seeing the Democratic Party sweep the November elections as anyone else here. My brother and his family live in Florida, plus what happens in the US affects the world. That was a particularly cheap and shit remark from you.
She responded, reminding people of Kaisich's positions. Kaisich only sounds "reasonable" because he is being compared to Trump, whose idiocy is threatening to take down the Republican Party as well as the nation.
Kaisich talks about "moderates" but he is not a moderate. He signed into law a bill that bans abortion after 20 weeks. He is anti-Union, signing a bill that prohibits public Union employees from striking. He is a Drug Warrior, wanting to "stomp all drugs out of this country". He presided over 15 death penalty executions. He is opposed to the Federal Government doing anything on Climate Change. He supports private prisons. He supports charter schools and vouchers instead of fixing public schools.
He is not say a Trump extremist or a Louie Gohmert, but he is a modern Republican, which is extreme enough to not defend him after he attacks a Democratic Party Representative.
She's supposed to just remain silent while this man, whose history shows us has no respect for women, runs his mouth about her.
and then locked back in the closet so he cant poison our movement. Oh, who am I kidding? Hell be listened and catered to.
I think his tweet should cause him to be disinvited.
What AOC is doing is showing integrity.
An example that certain dems would do well to follow.
No one asked Kasich to take up a speaking slot at our convention and then take a swipe at one of our most prominent members. And to hell with his "extremists on both sides" bullshit. AOC is right. He's an extremist!
even live in this country. So weird.
speaking out, it should start with an apology to us all.
More to the point, he's not demanding policy concessions in exchange for his support, as some have.
That's all he's interested in here. And given Biden is likely one term, why we're giving him any oxygen is beyond me. Most Republicans aren't very familiar with him, and those who are don't care what he thinks.
But hey, let's play politics like it's twenty years ago. Never did us wrong before.
we arent playing like it is 20 years ago
We are trying to win
You make some accusations that Biden is a one term president. How do you know that?
Regardless, when Bidens termis up, whenever that is, Kamala Haarris most likely will be our nominee, Kasich sure wont if that is what you are trying to imply
As for your assumption that repukes dont even know who he is, are you from Ohio? People in Ohio sure know who he is, and that is the whole point, we are trying to get Ohio
We get Ohio, the election is over
Because he wants to stir shit up with Ocasio-Cortez, so what, she didnt sit ideally by while he did that, she threw his false accusation right back at him
There is a much bigger issue, and that is winning in November
It doesn't help us in the long-run. Treating right-wing extremists who want to take away our rights as 'principled opponents of good faith' is a big part of how we got into this mess.
He isnt going to change my mind about him, but he may convince some republicans and independents to vote Democratic in November, and from my perspective that is as far as it goes
I can't believe people defend this. Well, I can.
But it doesn't make me less disgusted by it.
Jon Huntsman lost his primary for another governor race because he worked in Obama's administration. And he didn't even endorse Obama for president.
He's poison to them now, he has no political future in their Party.
help us capture Ohio
He has extremist anti-woman, anti-labor views that we should not legitimize as mainstream. AOC isn't the extremist. He is.
I don't buy this unity BS. Seems like the Republicans fucked up their party and now want to horn in on ours...
I feel it's like inviting the fox into the hen house.
And fwiw, is he getting more time that AOC, if so, why? At least she is a democratic rep.
Rep Ocasio-Cortez speaks to what makes me a life long Democrat.
Kasich is a practitioner of the type of Republican politics that lead directly to Trump. Ohio has been the center of some of the most questionable Election Day events in my life time. The only thing that he has been on the correct side of history on is when he realized that Trump is evil. Hes a free market Christian conservative Republican. Rep Ocasio-Cortez is the future of my party.
on the mute button in case he goes off script.
It's become a popular sport in recent years. Kasich is going to be too comfortable, I fear.
And he'll have his "moderate" fans.
I just want to get to November and get this over with. We have so much work to do.
Welcome to DU, Sympthsical!
I appreciate his support this election, but he does NOT get to have a say in defining our party for us.
goes into a place where he/she is an invited guest and proceeds to tell the host who deserves to be there?
How DARE him to tell a family member that he/she really shouldn't be there!
GO SUCK EGGS, Kasich. Better yet, have a cup or two of water from the Cuyahoga River*. I'm SO impressed with what the RepubliCons have done to help improve our environmental conditions under YOUR party's "leadership!"
This should come as no great surprise to anyone.
when they could have actually made a difference. Too little to late for me to give a flip what he has to say.
But no matter what he is on our side this year.
that gives him NO right to tell any of US, especially those out there that are really taking the fight to center court, who should be doing what and who is a "true" Democrat and represents the heart and soul of the party.
I'm really disappointed at those that won't stand up and fight for AOC just to get a speech from a RepubliCon that does not even come close to supporting what we believe our government should be.
Don't give me the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" bullshit - he's got his own agenda and will not support us when he's trying to get some office in the future.
Ohio is an important state...I see no purpose in her comments.
who opposes him is on our side. So yeah cool, cool and cool.
Restraint is such a valuable trait that I'm not sure she'll ever own. She needs to figure it out before running for higher office. Otherwise her approval rating will be capped near 40-45%. Swing voters do not appreciate that type of personality in a female candidate. It is simply reality and no reason to believe it will change.
I agree...there was no point to her comments. You don't want to be attacking someone who is endorsing Biden in a speech that will be a centerpiece moment, whether she likes it or not. She seems to think she has to play to her base every 5 minutes.
She should know that as a young woman she should just go sit in her corner and wait until she's asked if she has any thoughts about anything, like, should an anti-abortion, anti-union person speak out against a member of the party that has invited him to speak at their convention.
GAWD, when will they learn to know their place?
Oh, and by the way, just in case you didn't get it:
middle-aged (gen-x) and younger (millennials) voters generally do not, and tend to prefer strong female personalities.
AOC should've ignored him, but he did start it. We need the type of voters he brings in but we also need the type she brings as well. He could've made his point without using her name.
Women shouldnt curse in your opinion, eh?
vote for Biden/Harris in November, and just maybe give us a leg up in Ohio
Turns out Senator Duckworth was correct:
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) on Sunday warned against Democrats shifting too far to the left, saying it could alienate Midwestern voters.
Duckworth made the comments on CNN's "State of the Union"....
using the Democratic party to promote himself for 2024.
Ocasio-Cortez is correct that Kasich is anti-worker, especially against teachers.
Ocasio-Cortez is wrong about Kasich being an "anti-choice extremist". Kasich vetoed the heartbeat bill shortly before he left office.
That motherfucker and the other 3 Rethugs speaking literally helped build the party, set up the zeitgeist that produced Trump and the Trumpian Rethug Party.
Kasich has ZERO right to sit in judgement of who is and who is no representative of our party, and less than zero right to call any Democrat an extremist. For but one example, he signed a bill that would imprison a doctor just for performing a routing abortion procedure.
Charles P. Pierce : John Kasich Should Shut His Gob About What Qualifies as 'Extreme'
rest of them. His modus operandi is just at a slower pace, with more cunning, and a misleadingly happy, apparently sane face on.
He helped build the highway of hate that Trump drove in on.
He can speak at our convention if he wants to denounce Trump and weed off the barely-existent moderate-Republican vote and that's nice, but the LAST thing the Democratic Party needs is to be pushed further right.
We already lose votes from young people because there's not enough being done about the issues they care about, like raising the minimum wage, increasing access to health care (not health INSURANCE, that's not the same thing as health CARE), standing up against police brutality, etc.
I think AOC was wrong to call Kasich an "extremist," I don't think he is, but he is also a powerful man who should be able to take a little criticism.
Also, he's not a Democrat and AOC is. We should be backing her here.
