(54,937 posts)After years of being a dutiful wife and daughter-in-law, it took an ex-newspaper man named Louis Howe to teach her how to make speeches. And he coached her well. He reviewed all her speeches before and after. He may have spent more time with ER than FDR. And she was needed during his campaign for governor of NY and later for all FDR's campaigns for President. Her unassumed manner put audiences at ease. Soon she lost her fear of public speaking.
If Michelle Obama is compared to anyone, I'd like it to be Eleanor Roosevelt, although I believe Michelle Obama is pretty well evolved right now.

Even as first lady she was likely to be confrontational. She would refuse to sit in Whites only sections in the south.
Michelle took a different tack, especially considering she was the first black first lady. A bit like Jackie Robinson, she was expected to "prove" things to her critics. She did extraordinarily well and they hated her anyway.

ER was the one who was out and about and relaying the mood of the country to FDR. ER also wrote a regular newspaper column and advocated for progressive ideas her entire life.
So, no, Michelle Obama isn't another ER.
