(39,085 posts)people make a little speech about what we already know. I suppose they have to do it but it is a waste of valuable
time. I just doubt many people that could change their mind about the election will sit through it.

(90,010 posts)LOVE it!
And all the stories and triumphs and struggles, in their own element. Putting a real human face on things. Underscores the color and culture and state specialties and distinctions, and local concerns also. You got a sense of the personality of each state and its pride in how it fits into this down-but-not-out country.
VERY well done!

(2,747 posts)I hated pep rallies. Heating up the already-convinced.
Developing "school spirit".... whatever that is/was.
That's what I hated about the old conventions. Fun for the participants, maybe, but not really for the rest of us. I realize that sweating, cheering crowds are part of Americana, but so was the buggy whip... and the typewriter.
This is better IMHO.

(114,614 posts)I don't miss the crowd noise or the shots of all the back patting and milling around. I'm not going to miss the balloons or confetti. Some of the slower parts have had kind of an infomercial feel, but most of it has been very well done.
Kudos to the team who put this together. Well done!
Now to see what the GOP manages to kludge together at the last minute now that all their marketers have fled and the Orange Oinker wasted too much time tantruming for a big indoor crowd.

(12,011 posts)The way it's supposed to go is that the state delegations are supposed to pass and yield as necessary to ensure that the home state puts the nominee over the top. Yet this protocol has not been followed since at least 2004.
In 2008, it looked like that was what was going to happen - Illinois passed, then New Mexico, which would have put Obama over the top, yielded back to Illinois, but then Illinois kicked it over to New York so Hillary could propose suspending the roll call and nominating Obama by acclimation. It was a nice moment of unity but as a roll call junkie who's been obsessed with this since my first Young Dems convention I was slightly annoyed.
In 2012, they decided to have Ohio put Obama over the top instead of Illinois, which annoyed me at the time but I guess it was kind of prescient, since Ohio was the state that put him over 270 on election night.
In 2016, if I recall correctly they had New York and Vermont pass, then had Bernie call for recording the votes and then nominating Hillary by acclimation? Or did New York cast its votes when it came up in the roll call and only Vermont passed?
This year Delaware passed and went last, but I'm pretty sure Biden went over 1991 long before they came back to Delaware.
