It always sounds like they're living on a completely different planet.

(14,628 posts)They dont want black people, brown people, gay people, and women to vote. They want us to quietly accept whatever shit they choose to shove down our throats.

(33,643 posts)In the subjects of 'Logic' and 'Critical Thinking'.
That or they just didn't pay attention, or simply could not grasp it.
Without critical thinking skills, people develop all kinds of random and silly ideas about ... things.
Being exposed to beliefs in magical fairy sky daddies and having the idea that there is such a thing shoved down your throat from an early age ... doesn't help.

(67,112 posts)Something like this ... but on the light side...
"Delusions are the main symptom of delusional disorder. Theyre unshakable beliefs in something that isnt true or based on reality. But that doesnt mean theyre completely unrealistic. Delusional disorder involves delusions that arent bizarre, having to do with situations that could happen in real life, like being followed, poisoned, deceived, conspired against, or loved from a distance. These delusions usually involve mistaken perceptions or experiences. But in reality, the situations are either not true at all or highly exaggerated." WebMD
IMO a lot of this is encouraged and fostered by outfits like Fox News for the profit motive.

(52,286 posts)It's all based on tribal loyalty. If their leader says x is so, then that's their truth and their role is to go around insisting the x is so. If enough people go along with it, then they win and x effectively becomes reality.
That's certainly true is x is an image thing. For instance if they all go around tying some negative trait to an opposing candidate, then eventually that becomes part of that candidate's image. It works in politics. Not in science, but it works in politics. For all practical purposes, it becomes reality.
That's why they get so defensive when challenged. You're presenting yourself as an outsider, an enemy, and you're literally threatening their reality. You might think you're simply disagreeing, but they don't see it that way at all.

(6,488 posts)If they want to believe something, then it's true. If they don't want to believe something, then it's fake news.
What you and I call evidence and data and observation have nothing whatsoever to do with what really is. The only determinant of reality is what they want to believe.
That's how they can know immediately that something is fake news, without looking at any evidence or reasoning. Evidence and reasoning and rationality have nothing to do with reality. What their own eyes see has nothing to do reality if they don't want to believe. That's how they can be fervently certain of absolute nonsense.
That's how they can know for certain that Hillary eats live white Christian babies with taco sauce on the veranda of the sex slave colony on Mars that she runs out of the basement of a place that doesn't have a basement. If it says something horrible about someone they hate, then it's true automatically because they want to believe it.
