Barack Obama's speech put me to sleep.

I mean that quite literally. I think I registered the first half of it. I remember Obama saying that Trump was incapable of “growing into” the President’s job, but the rest of his speech I recorded only subconsciously. I may watch it again to hear what else he had to say, but make no mistake. Barack Obama put me to sleep.

I am not saying that his speech was boring. No. It was CALMING. I woke up this morning to find that no less a person than Rachel Maddow was deeply worried about the threat to the republic that Obama discussed in the second half of his speech. Sorry. I missed that. I was too relaxed. I just drifted off. Obama’s voice evoked in me an old, treasured feeling ... “It’s gonna be OK. He’s got this.”

“He’s got this.” Don’t you miss that feeling? After three and a half years of constant worry and tension, a nice, long speech from PBO was exactly what I needed. I was out like a light.

Strangely enough, I woke up right after his speech concluded, and I watched all of Kamala’s speech, which was excellent, but I had forgotten how much I treasured BHO’s VOICE. I have missed it—much more than I realized.

Kind of an embarrassing admission, but there it is.

1. When Trump speaks, I usually find myself clutching the arms of the recliner and hanging on.

When Obama speaks, I sag into the cushions. You know the feeling? All your muscles relax, the tenseness is gone and you melt into your chair or sofa. Totally relaxed...calm...good!

However, his warnings got my attention and all the softness disappeared. That was unlike him, so everyone pay attention.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow confessed that there were parts of President Barack Obama’s speech that genuinely “scared her.”

“President Obama’s speech tonight slayed me,” said Maddow. “I’m sure people will have different opinions about it because it’s a different kind of thing. His warnings that we could potentially be at the end of American democracy scared me, and I found upsetting and hard to watch. But it’s powerful. Powerful stuff.”

Rachel doesn’t go into much detail in that segment, but she does make it clear that Obama’s words carried a strong emotional punch (for her, at least).

That voice creates in me a feeling of safety and security that is welcome (and quite needed) after three and a half years of listening to the angry ramblings of a spoiled-rotten seven-year-old brat.
