(868 posts)what, Connecticut, or some place near there and we are talking about a
Kennedy.
What don 't you get?

(47,940 posts)Kennedy is going after Ed Markey's seat. it sucks.
wryter2000
(47,940 posts)But I don't like anything about this at all. There's no reason to go after Ed Markey. This has the potential to damage both candidates and deliver the seat to a Republican in a year when we have a chance to win the Senate. And we absolutely must win the Senate to save the country.
But if we have to do this idiocy, I don't know why any Dem should take one side or the other.
Demsrule86
(71,519 posts)lost. I think it is a waste. I really don't care who wins as I like both of them and can't vote in Massachusetts but I would bet that the Kennedy wins.
wryter2000
(47,940 posts)And they approve SCOTUS Justices. I worry less about a few seats in the House. We have a good majority now.
I imagine the Dem will win because this is Mass, but Scott Brown did win. It's not a sure thing. If we win four seats from the Rs (assuming Jones loses in AL), we have a majority with Kamala Harris breaking a tie. We have a chance, but it's so incredibly close.
I agree with you that it's a waste, but it's a bigger loss in the Senate than in the House.

(96,618 posts)There are 8 Dems running. One who is in the top four switched party affiliations, Dem To GOP to work on electing Baker- R as Governor. I hope my bright blue district does not vote for him to represent us.
I live here and am upset that in these times he decided to primary a good solid Senator and leave my district vulnerable.
PS, I voted for both of them in the last election. I will be voting for Markey in this one.

(63,221 posts)Kennedy really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way by trying to primary Markey.
DFW
(59,877 posts)He was younger than Markey, and his liberal credentials were nothing to be ashamed of, but the same people backing Markey applauded Engle's challenger. I'm sure they can explain the difference.
I'm not a Markey fan, but I agree that he was/is doing a decent job as Senator, and his response to Pelosi's endorsement was indeed pure class. Pelosi was endorsing her fellow House member. It happens. As long as the Democratic nominee wins the seat, and it stays safely in our hands, I'm OK with the outcome. I think I would have done things differently in Kennedy's shoes, but I'm not in them, so it's not for me to say.
There aren't two standards. If what happened to Engle was OK, then what's happening to Markey is OK. If Bowman's challenge to Engle was NOT OK, then Kenndy's challenge to Markey is also not OK.

(15,325 posts)Kennedy has every right to run for whatever seat in his State he wants to.
He had his reasons & they lie with positioning himself for the future. He's a young man with a stellar record on human & civil rights, he's bright (studied under Liz Warren's class/Harvard) & I hope he succeeds at his future goals.
There is not a daming thing about Joe Kennedy #3
Nothing.

(71,519 posts)It will remain in our hands. Personally I am against primarying sitting Democrats, but there are some high profile races where that happened just this year.

(56,081 posts)the concern isn't the house, it's the senate. part of it is whether we lose a good progressive (markey) and part of the concern is the battle risks handing the seat to the republicans.
Demsrule86
(71,519 posts)Both Kennedy and Markey are fine.
Budi
(15,325 posts)He cosigned the GND with Markey & Eliot Engel.
Don't even start damning his record.
He is Progressive. Unless they changed the qualifications lately.

(32,017 posts)Pelosi is backing a traditional, moderate Democrat (Kennedy) over the 4th most liberal Senator we have (Markey). Why she is doing this, I dont know, but people have speculated that she wants a younger party, and Kennedy is definitely younger than Markey.
I asked about the backstory on this puzzling development in another thread earlier today, and nobody had any reason to believe that Pelosi had it out for Markey for some personal reason. Nobody provided any relevant backstory.
I dont know what this is about.

(753 posts)He gets what's going on in this country in terms of civil rights, social justice, and equality. He is the future. Markey is a progressive, but he's not been near as vocal regarding issues like this that are of most concern to people like me. Yeah he's for the Green New Deal and that's fine and dandy, but I'm more concerned with getting shot while driving to Wal-Mart to get some groceries tonight. And Pelosi gets it too. Markey may be someone that's been in office for way too long.
DFW
(59,877 posts)Some who are strong supporters of Markey used EXACTLY that phrase to celebrate when Jamaal Bowman unseated progressive Elliott Engle in his primary race to keep his House seat recently.

(34,407 posts)Markey was never my Congressman, and as a Senator he's fine, but he's not going to be setting the world on fire. I want to vote for someone who can, and will, if given the chance.
