27. That was Sister Simone Campbell of Nuns on the Bus.
Thu Aug 20, 2020, 09:39 PM
Aug 2020

She has been fighting for social justice for decades with the Catholic Social Justice lobby, Network.

She's a good woman and worth listening to. I've worked with this group of nuns for years.

Catholic Lobby: Catholics Cannot Vote for Donald Trump

Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice said:

“Catholics cannot be true to their faith and vote for Donald Trump in November. Every day, I see the cracks in our nation’s foundational values growing wider. President Trump is doing everything in his power to divide us, while our economy and health care systems collapse under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a spiritual crisis, and our faith and patriotism compel us to speak and to act.

“Pope Francis has been clear about the sacred issues that Catholics and all people of good will are called to prioritize. These include protecting people in poverty, the elderly, and migrants and rejecting racism. Donald Trump does not share these values or act on these principles.

In a word, President Trump promotes racism. This evil cannot be ignored. Once again I hear Pope Francis’s words: “We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.” Dismantling racism in our country must be a foundational part of any pro-life agenda. President Trump’s attitudes and policies are contradictory to this holy effort.

“In this time of crisis we are called to speak clearly: Catholics cannot support another presidential term for Donald Trump and be true to their faith.”

Just to be clear, Network/Nuns On The Bus regard Roe v Wade as settled law, do not seek its overturn, and lobbied strongly against the Kavanaugh confirmation.

Sister Simone did not mention God or Jesus even once in her invocation, but she did mention the Spirit, whatever that spirit might be.

I do admit that it hurts to see her so casually dismissed. Jon Meacham is, as I write, invoking the words of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. I hope no one is turning the sound down.

I didn't see a an awful lot of Christianity splattered at the beginning. What part was that?

None of the video clips that opened the program were about religion. They were about Joe Biden, why we need to elect him, and where various people hope we'll be a year from now.

Then I saw Julia Louis-Dreyfus introduce the evening, a little boy say the Pledge of Allegiance, The Chicks sing the Star Spangled Banner, and Sister Simone do the invocation.

Aug 2020

As you're well aware, George II, Christianity is certainly not my cup-o-tea…but I think the use of the word "splattered" is a bit harsh. It suggests something that's messy, or haphazard, or directionless, or poorly planned and clumsily executed. That's not how it was at all.

Fri Aug 21, 2020, 01:02 PM
Aug 2020

I'm also a non-believer, but I've never been militant about it... nor do I feel put-upon by those who are believers. For me it's more of a "you do your thing & I'll do mine" kind of philosophy. Some call it "live and let live". I don't care if someone gives an invocation at a public meeting, or a blessing at a Thanksgiving meal. I'll just listen politely and quietly (but I won't pretend-bow-my-head).

If someone tells me to have a "blessed-day," I understand that the person is wishing me well, and I simply thank them. I've seen on the Internet how some think "have a blessed day" is some sort of insult akin to "I'm better than you" or "you need to find Jesus now" or "are you Saved, like me?"

If someone wishes me Merry Christmas, I don't get upset that they've dared to PRESUME that I even bother to celebrate Christmas (we do, but only for the traditional trappings, not for any religious reasons). I don't even get upset when Mormons or JW's knock on my door --- I'll just ignore it if I'm busy, or say "not interested" if I feeling like addressing them. I don't tell them they're foolish for their religious beliefs and I don't try to convince them to become atheists or agnostics. (I've actually met one or two "proselytizing atheists" who had all the fervor of evangelicals. It was very off-putting. Ugh.)

While there surely exist many hypocritical Christians who use their religion and who cherry-pick bible verses in order to justify their hatred, or misogyny, or homophobia, or anti-abortion stance... I believe that most are good people. It's very easy for me to judge people by their actions and their words, rather than taking an ignorant shortcut of judging people by their faith.

People have different opinions and experiences, of course... this is my experience and the way I look at things. It's served me well for many years (especially since I'm not continually having to be angry and offended about ordinary harmless things.) Most of my friends are Christians (or believers) and nearly all are aware that I'm not a believer, that I don't go to church (except for weddings and funerals), and that I don't pray. If they mind, or care, they never made it obvious to me. Although I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of them "pray for my soul" anyway.

143. Why the hostility to people of faith?
Fri Aug 21, 2020, 12:19 PM
Aug 2020

There is nothing wrong with the Democratic Party being a part of faith or a party where people of faith are welcomed. trump is not a person of faith and so it is important to draw a contrast between Joe and trump. I admit that I found a faith that suited me later in life but I am a person of faith and my faith is important to me.

The Democratic Party has come a long way. The final night of the party’s 2020 convention included a clip of presidential nominee Joe Biden speaking about faith and the death of his son Beau with Rev. Anthony Thompson, the pastor of the Charleston church where nine people (including Thompson’s wife) were killed by a White nationalist. On either side of that clip were two tributes, one to Biden’s faith from his friend Sen. Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) and the other to the late John Lewis, with a heartfelt introduction from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance-Bottoms and music from Common and John Legend. The nation’s best eulogist, Jon Meacham, tied it together in a plea to save America’s soul, to choose our better selves. It was a sort of civic sermon for Americans exhausted by President Trump and the energy it takes to be appropriately enraged by him. This is a now party that embraces faith and people of faith, a far cry from previous years in which Democrats too often avoided anything that smacked of religion.

Faith-based appeals — invoked by presidents of both parties in moments of crisis and loss — that speak to fairness, kindness, empathy and generosity can inspire and comfort. It is a language utterly foreign to Trump and the scam artists, kooks and bigots who dominate today’s GOP. This set the tone for the evening, despite one-liners from Julia Louis-Dreyfus that were hit and miss. (Trump lip-syncer Sarah Cooper, however, hit a home run. She began with a bit mouthing his crazy-talk on absentee voting but then in her own voice moved into an important message on voting and the security of voting from home.)

Fri Aug 21, 2020, 12:36 PM
Aug 2020

that was the good point about it. but like the comment that I responded to originally, there was a segment that came off a little heavy handed - especially for nonbelievers. I probably wouldn't have even mentioned my discomfort if I hadn't seen a fellow traveler that felt the same. we are rare out in the world. it can be a small thrill running across someone like you - even here on DU.

I rarely disrespect believers personally but yes I do have problems with religion and the religious in general. majority privilege and all that.

it would be nice to see the great inclusiveness of our Party be a little more visible on nonbelief too. I'm not demanding huge increases or making it any kind of major priority, just a little smidge more acknowledgement of our existence would be great!

He kept talking about how WE are affected. This is OUR country. WE have all experienced and losses but WE are better when WE work together.

Contrast that with Donny boy's I am the only one who can fix it. I know the best people.
