From that Davis Guggenheim-produced video about Joe Biden that was shown tonight . . .
When he entered school, there was a problem: Joe had a stutter.
"And it is mortifying, it allows that child to become an object of ridicule." And when his teacher mimicked him, Joe ran home from school. His mother drove him back.
"Did you say to my son, 'Mr. Buh-buh-biden'?"
The nun said, "I was just trying to make a point."
And my mother stood up, all five feet two of her, "If you ever talk to my son like that again, I'll come back and rip that damn bonnett off your head, do you understand me? Joey, go back to class."

(13,037 posts)The penguin suit back in the day was just too unpractical, and might i say, a little creepy
The nuns on a bus are doing great public service so kudos to them. I admire anyone who dedicate their lives in service on others.

(2,191 posts)Among all the As, I got a "minus" and "poor citizenship," which was 1960s Catholic school terminology for speaking without being called on.
My dad, only 30 or 31 himself and not particularly impressed with Catholic school for us kids, said "Did my daughter wake up in MOSCOW this morning?"
Of course I was mortified, but now I appreciate what he did.
Sorry about the deletes; phone issues.

That video of Braden Harrington still has me "verklempt." It was powerful and I just love that kid.

(9,265 posts)My husband (a graduate of St. Pius X and Cardinal OHara) told me this incident in his class in the late 60s: one nuns favorite punishment was to smack the kids forehead against the blackboard. One time she did it so hard to a kid (not DH) that he passed out. Ambulance was called and the kid taken away. Next day the kid was BACK IN SCHOOL and apparently the parents were perfectly fine with this. Nothing was ever heard of the incident again. Can you imagine if that happened now? And thank god we have gotten a little more enlightened about child abuse.

(61,694 posts)feel the need to violently react to a few kids who don't fall in line every moment of every day. If the child had been truly awful, as in deserving of risking his skull getting cracked, he would have been expelled.

(19,808 posts)Catholic kindergarten in Libya in 1964 when my dad was stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base because that was the only place that they could send me.
I remember all I did was get into trouble and end up behind the Blackboard or getting swatted with a ruler... I was fascinated with The Grotto they had, so I kept sneaking out to get a look at it got me in trouble every time.
Then the nun would feel bad about what she did and then sneak me candy .. what kind of lesson was that?

(13,895 posts)I was a bad student, I admit it. I just did not care and did not understand how to study. When I took those test that showed your intelligence I did good. My working Mom got called into the office many times because of my poor grades but good potential The principal called me into his office one day and for some reason he was really upset. His name was George V Lasher, I shit you not. He was yelling about my grades and at one point he stuck his finger in my chest and pushed me back against the wall.. Not cool.
My father, a merchant seaman happened to be home from a trip saw me upset when I got home. I relayed the story and now HE was pissed. He made an appointment with the principal the next day to discuss my "grades". When we got there we went straight in and my father closed the door. Que spooky music. He asked Mr Lasher if he pushed me against the wall and he made some bullshit excuse about making a point. For context this was in the mid 1950's when corporal punishment was still around in some places.
Now my Pops was ex navy hard drinking hard fighting Merchant Marine with a short temper. He got with in about a 1/2 inch of ol' Georges face and told him under no uncertain terms if he pulled any more bullshit (his words) with me there would be consequences. I remember as my fathers elevated voice boomed little bits of spit hit Georges glasses. George was a bald skinny man of a small stature. and my Pops had about 70 pounds on him..
We walked out and I never had a problem again. Mr Lasher never looked or spoke to me after the "incident". I was left alone after that.
And so it goes.

(63,221 posts)These people are bullies who pick on people who can't fight back. The only thing they understand is being picked on or abused by someone more powerful than they are. I don't usually condone violence, but with people like this, sometimes it is the only thing that works.

(13,895 posts)Backpfeifengesicht... A face that needs to be punched or slapped. This principal was a little man on a power trip. My father never touched him and got the point across. I like the psychological "slap" better than the physical.. Both of my parents were good at mind games.
