And don’t have any intellectual thought at all. So i was just driving listening to Smerconish on XM. So his guest host is taking calls on what people thought of the DNC....so this one right winger calls and says that liberals and Democrats are hypocrites because they were playing the National Anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance even though we hate those symbols and hate America. I just thought it was funny that his simple mind doesn’t even realize that when we protest the Anthem and Pledge it’s actually to point out the hypocrisy in what they are supposed to represent, and people like him who hold them so dear to his heart don’t practice what those symbols are supposed to represent. So who is the real hypocrite? But his simple mind wouldn’t even understand what I just wrote.

5. Carl Jung warned us that symbols can become more important to folk than the reality behind them.

Thus, displaying a cross and calling yourself Christian is more important than emulating Christ.

Flying a flag and proclaiming yourself patriotic is more important than being a good citizen.

7. Yes they are. They have binary thinking. Very little room for the nuance that is life.

Conservatives need structure and order. They need simple "wrong/right", "yes/no", "this/that" answers in their lives. Life is complicated and they are scared of that complication.

For a conservative, crime is just bad, that's it, don't want it, get it away from me. They can't or won't take the time to see what factors contribute to crime so that we can attempt to mitigate those factors and try to alleviate the conditions that make crime more likely. "Nope, just more cops, more jails, arrest them all, get them away from me". Then their kid gets popped for drugs and they are like, "It's the schools, it's society, it's video games."

Patriotism is not about being blinded to the problems within your country. Patriotism is about fighting to make your country live up to its ideals.
