I've gotta admit that, on the one hand, I was glad for the sizzle and pizazz. It gave the show some of the energy you expect when you sit down to watch the screen for two hours.
On the other, of course, is the question about what it means to value female beauty. One thing it means, of course, is to often unfairly prejudice our thinking about the smarts of the woman. But is the only answer to require that women stop with the hair care and makeup and gorgeous clothes?
Bottom line. I was thoroughly happy with them but kept wondering if I shouldn't have been.
Julia Louis Dreyfus, was, of course SPECTACULAR. I love her. One of the NYT columnists observed that last night, except for Biden, was the blandest night. But that's gotta be "except for Dreyfu" too.

(5,507 posts)She never wore anything like that on Seinfeld. But I guess it is kind of like the female Fox news hosts, you get more attention with beautiful women and Julia is a real comedian too. Also they did have Latina, Black, and White, so they managed to take that into consideration.

It's so funny and she is fabulous in it. She deserved all those Emmys.

I thought they were wonderful. Powerful. I suppose I was listening to what they had to say, rather than focusing on how they looked.

(13,913 posts)and same for Tracee Ross. And while i've seen the other 2 (Eva L & Kerry K) in glamorous outfits, what they were wearing were fairly conservative and appropriate for their role as MCs. I was happy they all volunteered their time to deliver a well-produced event and all 4 did excellent jobs.

(113,973 posts)to moderate/MC the event, the experience, and the poise--plus the ability to engender interest and that is a problem? Sure we could have picked any number of non-professional people to do so, but honestly, that is a skill that is honed. Our politcos, strategists, and activists rarely have that experience/honed skill either. So, we chose those actors/comedians who are ALSO DEM activists and we are concerned because they happen to be attractive too? It isn't as though we pulled from the attractive, yet talentless Celebs for Celeb's sake Kardashians or the like.
I don't see a problem.

They were just fine. They didn't call a bunch of attention to themselves. They were talk show hosts making a joke of the convention.

(15,506 posts)... for the role. But the professionals didn't HAVE to be glamorous, or women, for that matter.
Women are still fighting for equality, black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party, the message was being sent that women matter, women are as able to host conventions as men. As to their 'glamor', each to their own, I didn't see 'glamor', I saw and heard talented, intelligent, skilled women who are strong Democrats who support the ticket.

(18,486 posts)They were also anchoring and narrating a live broadcast with many moving pieces and needed to be at ease in front of a camera, so professional actresses were a logical choice.
And while these women were all attractive in a traditional sense, they all brought so much more than their looks to the gig.
And since they weren't the only women featured at the convention - and the convention was full of women of all shapes, sizes, colors, and degrees of "glamour" and "sizzle," I don't see any problem at all
