Americans recoiled in horror after First Lady Melania Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to unveil the newly renovated Rose Garden Saturday ahead of her speech there Tuesday for the Republican National Convention.
Twitter users blasted the first lady for removing about a dozen crabapple trees from the Rose Garden planted by Jackie Kennedy in 1961.

(17,757 posts)I watched the process of some 150 year old (Huge) live oak trees being moved where I used to work. It is an expensive process, but there are people who specialize in it, and it is generally, although not always, successful. Crab Apples aren't that big, it shouldn't be a problem.

(47,420 posts)Trees that old are presumably going to be hard to replant.

(9,238 posts)The key is to cut the roots in perimeter around the tree then let the tree sit and recover for a few days before the actual move. Then once moved keeping the soil moist until the tree is able to grow enough new roots to survive.
Still its horrific what Melania did. Its like gutting the China room in the White House and putting in a rec room.

(6,126 posts)With these trees, moving them made no sense. But if arborists determined they were at their end of life and they were taken out, I would have no problem. If this was just done on the whim of Skeletor, I would be as pissed as others here on the board.

(2,809 posts)This just seems to be pointlessly petty and messed up to me for some reason. Everybody left those trees alone for almost 60 years. Now, with 2 months left before trump is tossed out she goes and uproots the these trees ("which will be planted elsewhere" yea right).
Granted, I didn't know about the trees before this, but mostly nobody did and didn't have to. The inhabitants of the White House knew better than to be quite horrible enough to pull them up. A good number of them were/are plenty horrible on their own merits.

(10,484 posts)but this WaPo story discussing the history of the Rose Garden and some of the rationale behind the redo sheds some light.

(77,276 posts).... some old standards might still be going but I doubt it. As per the roses that were in the
garden when Melania "renewed it" in August I doubt any of them could be saved.
The new garden is an abortion and looks like it was done by Joe's Lawn and Landscaping
Service. The secret of a good landscape is you should always have something of interest
year round and from what I could tell this work doesn't pass that test.

(4,713 posts)most people would have removed her years ago. I had an arborist assess the trees on my property and he suggested that we just tend to her as a beloved pet rather than cut her down. That's what we've done. My kids ate peanut butter and crab apple jelly sandwiches.
Perhaps it's different with blossoming crab apple trees. Ours bears fruit - not so much any more though.

(6,250 posts)I may be the one lone voice, but those trees were old (nearing end of lifespan and maybe losing some attractiveness), and they were obscuring another beautiful feature - that gorgeous collonade, of equal historic significance! Everything was rather overgrown and suffocating and now looks fresher, but the low-growing beautiful flowers should have remained.
Flowering crabapple trees often (but not always, depending on variety) produce messy small fruit, which are of limited use due to their bitter and tart flavor.
I would like to know if the trees were moved, and who did the work.
