I love your sig quote from Chief Seattle by the way, and not to be picky, but it was originally spelled Seathl. The early settlers changed it to Seattle.
He was friends with Doc Maynard, who really started Seattle, but that's a whole 'nother story...

(43,307 posts)Thanks!
For all the Indian lit I've taught, I never read that Seattle spelling anywhere.
Think I should change it? I do like the original better.
AmyStrange
(7,989 posts)I've seen it spelled other ways:
Chief Seattle summary: A chief to the Duwamish people his native name is closer to Siahl
https://www.historynet.com/chief-seattle
but, Seathl is the most common one that I've seen:
Born sometime around 1790, Seattle (Seathl) was a chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes who lived around the Pacific Coast bay that is today called Puget Sound. He was the son of a Suquamish father and a Duwamish mother, a lineage that allowed him to gain influence in both tribes.
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/chief-seattle-dies-near-the-city-named-for-him
Anyway (in case you've read this far), Doc Maynard is the one who suggested that the city be named after the Chief, and he's also the one who really built up the city.
When he got to Seattle, the leader of the Denny Party was sick, and he helped get him healthy again.
In return, he gave him the rights to the swampy part of Seattle, but Maynard was smart and had the ships drop their ballast there for free, and that's where Pioneer Square stands today.
He was also a drunk, but a SMART drunk!

if you care to read it. It's nothing important.
I just laugh when everyone makes so much noise about the Denny Party starting Seattle, when Doc Maynard's the one who really built it.
Anyway, you're welcome.

(43,307 posts)some tribal works, along with a couple of novels.
Six years ago I read An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, gave copies away, I learned so much.
I appreciate your knowledge of this.

I actually did some research into the different Native American legends about Sasquatch.
It's fascinating stuff, and I even wrote an essay on it:
http://www.amystrange.org/UNX-sasquatch.html
It's pretty long, and there's no need for you to read it, but it does have original drawings by me, maps and charts. I did a really thorough job of it, but my roommate, at the time, was the one who wrote the final draft.

(63,221 posts)They call this a line-up of key speakers?
It's more like, "Hey, we couldn't pay anyone enough to show up so we had to force our family and a few other people who we had some dirt on to speak at our upcoming shit-show." What a joke!
I noticed they threw a bone to Eric "Gums" Trump, so obviously they are really scraping. Hopefully he will read us a passage from his latest book.
