I get a text that they’ve received it and all is well. They’d otherwise say they’ve received it and need me to verify signatures.

online or in person at your local town clerk.
If it is rejected for any reason they will contact you using the information on your application.

In mine (MN), you can check on-line to find out whether your ballot was received and accepted. If not you can request another one.

The law:

§ 24.2-711.1. Absentee ballots; confirmation of receipt; notice of reason for rejection.

A. The Secretary, in coordination with local election officials, shall implement a free-access system by which a voter may determine:

1. Whether the voter's application for an absentee ballot has been received and accepted; and

2. Whether the voter's absentee ballot has been received and the current status of the absentee ballot.

B. The electoral board of each county and city shall send a written explanation of the reason for rejection of an absentee ballot to the voter whose absentee ballot is rejected within 90 days of the date on which the ballot is rejected. The State Board of Elections shall promulgate instructions to implement the provisions of this section.

2002, c. 252; 2013, c. 537.

doesn't appear to provide the opportunity to correct or appeal a rejected ballot.

"The Governor has proposed an "Absentee cure process: This measure will ensure Virginians’ voting rights are protected by allowing them to fix an error on their absentee ballot. Currently, Virginians who make an error are not able to fix that error and therefore their ballot may be discarded. Many Virginians will be voting absentee for the first time this November, and this language will help ensure Virginians’ votes are counted."

I posted about this in https://www.democraticunderground.com/10818537 on Tuesday and haven't heard any progress report on the proposals.
