RNC chair defends plans for Pompeo to address convention

Washington — Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel defended programming for this week's Republican National Convention that will reportedly include a speech from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo while he is in the Middle East, and said the party will be covering the costs of all convention events.

"The events that we've put forward from the RNC and the campaign are going to be paid for by the convention, from the RNC and the campaign," McDaniel told "Face the Nation" on Sunday when pressed on whether it was appropriate for the nation's top diplomat to participate in an event focused on domestic politics, and whether taxpayer resources are being used for the president's reelection campaign.

McDaniel said it's "appropriate" for Pompeo to discuss the Trump administration and highlight policies "that have made the lives better of the American people."

"The programming, the staging, everything that we're doing will be paid for by the Republican National Committee and the campaign," she said, adding the Republicans are "not using taxpayer dollars to pay for our convention."

Other than Stephen Miller, who is in a category all by himself, Pompeo might be the most unlikable person in the Cabinet. Let's remind people about that, and remind them that, unlike all recent Secs of State, he has dropped from sight for the past several months.

It’s completely inappropriate for the Secretary of State to campaign on behalf of the sitting President.
