IMO, neither the Republican party nor their base will be "maneuvered back into the corral they were in before Trump." Trump is not the cause of what the Republican party is today; he is the culmination of years and years of their worst impulses, finally laid bare. There is no putting that genie back in the bottle.

The GOP has made zero effort to change with the times or the demographics of a changing America. They have made zero effort to expand support beyond their 35-40% base. They have embraced Trump, so much so, that they are now the party of Trump. They are inextricably intertwined.

And Trump is not going quietly into that good night, even if he loses in a landslide. ( 🤞🤞🤞 ) He will permeate the airwaves and continue to tweet. And, especially if he loses in a landslide, he will be martyred. We will never be rid of him until he takes his last breath. And most likely, even then, we still won't be rid of him.

And even then, his very loud, ill-informed, racist, misogynistic and hateful base will remain. They will continue to control the party for the next 10-15 years, minimum. The Tea Party is a perfect example of this. And now, NOW, QAnon is on the rise. And the GOP will continue to fear them and pander to them. And these people Hold. A. Grudge.

So, I stand by my original statement... the current Republicans won't EVER let these guys back in the club.

This is what it is now - "surprises".
No more policy debates; in the GOP, no more policy at all.
So now we have been dragged into this muck and now we too must play the surprise game.
