Der Bund Deutscher Mädel was the girls' arm of the Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth).

After the war, the Socialists in the East thought it was was such a good idea that they continued the concept with the FDJ (Freie Deutsche Jugend--Free German Youth), changed the scarf color, and continued the tradition--basically, State indoctrination for the benefit of the sole ruling party. During the war, in England, before it became a State propaganda arm, it actually cared for Jewish refugees. After the war, the BDM was banned, of course, but the East kept the idea alive, and made the FDJ (like the Young Pioneers in the Soviet Union) THE state youth organization. Get 'em while they're young.

It's a good thing no one put the idea to trump in 2016. Otherwise, we would have camps all over the country for the YT (Young Trumpanzees).
