Most seem to be conservatives which is ironic because thats the crowd that likes to be anti government tyranny and are also anti unions, the exact opposite of police and police unions.....

Remember, you can be "too smart" to be a cop (article is old, but given what is happening, it is likely still accurate).

Can a person actually be too smart to be a cop in America? Considering all the police brutality and officer-involved shootings in the news these days, heres a rhetorical question for you: how well does this hiring practice bode for cops actually being able to follow the Constitution or use proper discretion while protecting and serving America? A federal courts decision back in 2000 suggests that, yes, you actually can be.
Robert Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, scored a 33 on an intelligence test he took as part of the application process to become a police officer in the town of New London, Connecticut. The score meant Jordan had an IQ of 125.
The average score for police officers was a 21-22, or an IQ of 104. New London would only interview candidates who scored between 20 and 27.

And the theory behind it?
Those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training, ABC News reported back then. While at least acknowledging the basic fact that such a policy might be unwise, the court deemed it had a rational basis because it was put in place to lower cop turnover.

(1,159 posts)Conservatives see police as their own personal weapon against others, particularly black men. Thus, rather than get blood on their white, Christian clothes by personally lynching uppity trouble makers and small time criminals, they let the police do the killing for them. Thats why they always say We support OUR police.

(96,043 posts)Right Wing policies create economic disparity and in particular unemployment and destitution. These give rise to crime and disorder, of a degree and kind certain to stress anyone who confronts it day in and day out. Similar rates of employment for all sorts of citizens would ease the strain of policing, and make police better able to perform at solving, and hence deterring, crimes. At certain levels of political sophistication it is a commonplace that is not what police are 'really' for, but that is the general belief among the people, and police themselves.

(96,043 posts)What proportion is uncertain, but it would be appreciable. There are also things harder to reckon with, such as habituation to a behavior, and 'self-medicating' for corrosive stress by anger and violent action. These are things that may trap decent people who are facing unpleasant situations, and while they may bring a certain relief, often could not be properly called enjoyable.
