NBA superstar LeBron James is wading further into the fight over voter suppression, with his voting rights organization, More Than A Vote, launching a multimillion-dollar campaign to fortify the number of poll workers in vulnerable Black communities.
The group, which bands together James, other star athletes, state election officials and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, is partnering to draft young activists to work at polling locations for November's general election across the southern and battleground states of Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas."There are a lot of people who grew up in the inner city who are afraid to vote," James, the star of the Los Angeles Lakers, told reporters last week while wearing a "More Than a Vote" T-shirt inside the NBA's quarantined campus in Orlando, Florida. "We're giving everyone the tools, outlets."
Some of the states at the center of the effort were some of the sites of this year's most chaotic primaries. Georgia was one of the largest states to struggle with running an election during the COVID-19 pandemic -- but it is not alone. In early April, Wisconsin wrestled with similar challenges -- and saw similar scenes of long lines and voter confusion -- in what could be an unnerving preview of November if the virus persists.

(256 posts)Reached out to the Biden campaign encouraging them to have Lebron engaged in the campaign. He should have been part of the DNC speaking out on behalf of young black men. He's all in with rebuilding the community, not by just words but by action
HUD has his name all over it eventually in the Biden administration.

(28,342 posts)actively endorsing and campaigning with Biden in such a high-profile manner. Mr. James is a highly astute advocate for his cause, so I think this is why things are as they are. I'm certain that Biden would have been ecstatic to have Mr. James by his side at the DNC. Who wouldn't?

(51,626 posts)I wonder if the younger voters out there (who are not at risk for Covid) can get their asses to the polls to do this. I worked the polls when I was 18 and 19 and I enjoyed it. It was a good experience and contributes to the community.

(15,290 posts)but a lot of fun. I had a blast doing it for nearly 4 years. You get to see democracy in action and feel good at the end of the night that you've done a civic duty.
I got to meet neighbors that I otherwise might not have, too.

(5,801 posts)Bad for ABC pushing the nonsense that there is just "confusion" or "problems" with voting in those states. No, it's deliberate GOPee actions to screw voters the GOPee doesn't want voting.

I hope all the NBA players who are choosing not to play basketball, choose to join LeBron's organization and help with this critical work.
