Pence, who leads the White House coronavirus taskforce, was one of the few speakers during the convention to acknowledge the devastating impact of the pandemic, calling it a “time of testing” for the nation. Recasting Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, he vowed that a second term would “make America great again, again”.

Pence spoke hours after a curfew was instituted in the Wisconsin suburb of Kenosha, where protests continued for a fourth night in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by a white police officer.

But the vice-president made no mention of Blake, whose lawyers have said he is paralyzed, nor did he address the arrest of a white 17-year-old, who was charged with homicide after two people were shot dead and another seriously wounded apparently in connection with the protests on Tuesday night. 2. In Trump-Pence's America, for the first time in my life I feel unsafe going to work,

shopping, having friends or relatives over to my home, going to a movie, concert, or museum, dining in a restaurant, getting a haircut, taking a course in the local adult ed program or an in-person continuing education seminar in my professional field, seeing my doctor and dentist for routine checkups, going to the gym, attending church services and volunteer activities, and voting. All because of their criminal negligence and incompetence in the face of covid-19. I am trying to do what I can to avoid being one of the currently estimated >300 thousand Americans they will have killed by December 1 of this year. Now he's talking about safety? Is that supposed to be some kind of sick joke?
