I’ve always thought of political correctness more as common decency and good manners, but the Trump worshipers have neither. He gave them permission to be as crass and nasty as he is. The problem now is getting them to crawl back under their rocks after the election. I suspect they won’t, and Trump, Fox, and hate radio will all be selling nothing but garbage about Biden-Harris for the next four years—just as they did to Obama but worse because Trump has made the hatred and the anger worse.

When Ted Kennedy met James Eastland

https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287159970

my reply

Soul crushing white male privilege on parade, bourbon or scotch for Ted, for black folk like me, the Eastland family wasn't quite so nice over the past 150, 200 years.

Woods Caperton Eastland was Senator James Eastland's father

this occurred on the family plantation in 1904.................

A Reminder of Why You Should Never Take Lynching Lightly (WARNING: Graphic Description)

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:NIv_kDPBKZYJ:https://thewitnessbcc.com/a-reminder-of-why-you-should-never-make-light-of-lynching-warning-graphic-content/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=se

Jim Crow “justice” was quick and certain for any black man who killed a white man. Fearing for their lives, Luther and Mary Holbert went on the run. Led by Eastland’s brother, Woods Caperton Eastland, the alleged crime ignited the white population and hundreds of white men who pursued the Holberts with bloodhounds guiding them. Despite Mary disguising herself as a man and taking to the swamps, the Holberts were captured three days later. What happened next is a horror of inhumanity.

The lynching didn’t happen immediately. It was planned for the next day, a Sunday afternoon after church so a large crowd could gather. The murderers strategically chose a location for maximum intimidation. It took place on the property of a black church in Doddsville, MS. The black church has historically been the locus of religious and communal life for black people. Performing a lynching on church grounds sent a message to all black people in the area that no place was safe from white supremacy.

More than a thousand people showed up to gawk at the lynching of Luther and Mary Holbert. The lynchers tied up the Holberts and commenced with “the most fiendish tortures.” First, the white murderers cut off each of the fingers and toes of their victims and gave them out as souvenirs.

Then they beat them so mercilessly that one of Luther Holbert’s eyes hung only by a shred from its socket. Then came the most fiendish abuse.

The Vicksburg Evening Post reported, “The most excruciating form of punishment consisted in the use of a large corkscrew in the hands of some of the mob. This instrument was bored into the flesh of the man and woman, in the arms, legs, and body, and then pulled out, the spirals tearing out big pieces of raw quivering flesh every time it was withdrawn.”

Finally, the Holberts, who were still alive, were taken to a pyre. The white men cruelly forced two black men under threat of death to drag the Holberts to the fires. They burned Mary first so Luther could see his beloved killed. Then they burned him.

The tragic and infuriating lynching of the Holberts is just one of literally thousands of similar examples. Although the details vary, the broad contours remain the same. Lynchings usually took place because of some perceived slight. Anti-lynching crusader, Ida B. Wells, found that lynchings were often over economic disputes. But imagined sexual predation on the part of black men was frequently an excuse.

Almost no white people who participated in the lynching of black citizens ever faced a legal consequence. Woods Eastland, who led the mob, actually faced charges in the murder. But his acquittal was a foregone conclusion. After the all-white jury found him innocent, Eastland hosted a party on his plantation to celebrate.

That was on a pre-Trump message board and I hope it was just a troll! The person seemed serious, though, writing a very long message that had all kinds of crazy "solutions" for this country.

the republicans were a merger of the northern whigs and the know nothings. the know nothing strain still runs strong in them.

very few planters were democrats (another conservative myth busted.) most were the southern whigs. the common confederates (who had few slaves and little choice) were southern democrats.

heather richardson was on c span this morning. she made many interesting points and i do want to read her book.

https://www.amazon.com/How-South-Won-Civil-War/dp/0190900903

why did the planters fight so hard for their slaves?

we often think of the slaves as cotton pickers, and i suppose they did that as well. they were primarily breeding stock and sex objects. they were bred like animals for various functional and esthetic purposes. males were gelded, and of course sadism was rampant.

There were meetings, northern businessmen with a protectionist agenda, railroads in which Lincoln was incrementally involved. That period about 1856 to 1932 didn't examine the evolution of business interests much - the historians were mostly Republicans at private universities founded by philanthropy so you know where their bread was buttered. The Progressive Era was managed and co-opted by manufacturers and employers, and the Red Scare snuffed out. I only read a little about it in Jim Marrs' "Rule by Secrecy" and Weinstein's "The Corporate Ideal in the Liberal State" which really teaches about politics as a dynamic process.

Intense propagandization against the "enemy of the people" and dire warnings that "our culture is being destroyed."

There is a large minority in this country which is gullible and believes the lies. They would gladly wage war and commit genocide against liberals and minorities.

I'm first born first generation of a Holocaust survivor. My father felt the build-up to the Iraq War, when everyone opposed was labeled a traitor, reminded him of his time in 1938 Berlin. Trump and his supporters are far worse. If he somehow stays in office, god forbid what will happen in this country. Places like this will be monitored by government henchmen, and people will disappear. The "German People" will ignore events and many will openly support the ridding of the "libs"...us. Taking to the streets may be the only way to get our country back and rid the world of the Trump stench.

having this happen right here in our own country. Our relative freedom could be gone in six months from now and that scares the hell out of me.

I cannot believe what has happened to this country in less than four years. Too many people take our democracy for granted and underestimate what one man, supported by a corrupt and gluttonous shell of a party can do to take it out completely.

We are in scary times.

My father escaped to England on the Kindertransport after his Bar Mitzvah in Berlin in 1938 (he was born in Berlin). The rest of my family stayed in hiding, but my Aunt and Grandmother were also involved with an anti-Nazi event known as Rosenstrasse after my grandfather was arrested.

I have seen films (documentaries) on the Kindertransport and on Nicholas Winton and I also saw a film called "Rosenstrasse" as well, which I think was based on the event that your Aunt and Mother were involved in. I am glad your father was able to escape to England. It must terrify him to see what is happening today in this country after all he has been through.

I am sure there is a lot you could tell us if you ever feel up to it, but I know that it must be difficult for you to speak about such a painful event in your family's history. Thank you for sharing that. And again, welcome!

In the past, there were some limits to what the could say and do. The GOP had once some leaders who were civilized, Howard Baker for example, and right wingers knew that some behavior will not be tolerated and condoned. Those leaders are long gone, that GOP does not exist anymore, and now the right wing is looney, violent, openly fascist and capable of anything. We are almost exactly where Germany was in 1938, on the brink of the abyss.
