I know you vote by mail.
Here is a handy link to use while you do it.

That is all.

(1,005 posts)it's not up to date. It appears to be pre-primary election information. Darcy Burner is out and it's DelBene against Tea Bagger Koster. Too bad the DNC supported a Microsoft Millionaire 1%er (DelBene) instead of a true progressive (Burner).

(108,976 posts)It's too bad they had to run in the same district -- I liked them both.
By your estimation, neither FDR nor John and Ted Kennedy could be true progressives, since they were all in the 1%.

washington seems to be the republic of microsoft these days.

(108,976 posts)You do realize that Darcy also worked at Microsoft, don't you?
Suzan, like Darcy, came from middle class roots -- and she hasn't forgotten them. Nor has she forgotten the struggle her family went through when her father lost his pilot job. (What elite prep school did she attend? I haven't seen anything about that online -- not that that would matter unless you would also rule out candidates like FDR and Kennedy.)
I've met her personally and she's a warm, caring person with solid progressive values. She'll be an excellent representative if she can win that spot in a largely red district.

Delbene has a rags to riches biography. Her father lost his job as an airline pilot when she was growing up, and the family just scraped by. When Suzan graduated college, her parents moved in with her because they had nowhere else to go. Since then, she worked her way up the ladder to become an executive at Microsoft, a candidate for Congress in 2010 and then most recently, head of the state Department of Revenue.
Which brings us to 2012, where she is running for the newly created 1st district. Im running because I believe strongly that we need to stand up for the middle class. Today, I dont think we are giving people the same opportunities and chances. The previous generation invested in us so we could have those opportunities, and I dont think we are doing that today, we are letting that fall apart.
Without missing a beat, she dives right into the economy. My number one priority is getting this economy back on track. How do we do that? First, we need to get our financial system on a sound track, so that people feel their investments are secure. We need to implement a modern Glass-Steagall Act, that would separate investment and commercial banking. Without diving too much into policy, she discussed about the community aspects of the Great Recession and how her experience helps.

(20,729 posts)distinctly upper middle class. so are burner's.
i don't believe fairy stories. bellevue, mercer island, reed ($22K/semester just for tuition).
right, her parents moved in with her because they were broke. uh-huh.
pnwmom
(108,976 posts)The fact that Delbene attended Reed says nothing about her financial situation at the time.
And you seem really stuck on the idea that Delbene's made money, which means you rule out FDR, the Kennedys, and every other Democratic politician who has either come from a wealthy family or made it on their own.
I would have been happy with a win by either Burner or Delbene, as I had voted for both of them in past elections. It's too bad they had to run against each other, but I think Delbene has an organization that will give the Rethug a real challenge -- in a red district. That's what we should be focussing on, not which one married a richer husband or had a better job at Microsoft. This is just ridiculous.
HiPointDem
(20,729 posts)well to do going into politics. just don't see why they feel obliged to do the horatio alger schtick. fdr didn't.
pnwmom
(108,976 posts)And Darcy Burner went to Harvard. Guess that makes her an elitist, too.
Delbene's family had a great setback when she was only 9 years old, which taught her something about life. And that something differentiates her from her Rethug opponent. Why shouldn't she tell her story?
Are you from WA? Why are you so interested in dumping on our winning candidate? In case you haven't noticed, we're in a general election now and there's a Rethug candidate to oppose.

DelBene was still a toddler in Selma, Ala., when her parents divorced and split their six kids into two new families. DelBene, second youngest, went with her mom, and rarely saw her father or older siblings again.

Her stepfather lost his pilot's job when DelBene was 9, and the family fell out of the middle class. "When they lost all their money, it changed the whole dynamic," John Oliver said.
The family settled near Vail, Colo., and her mother opened a toy store to support the family. That period is a central anecdote in DelBene's biographical TV ad.
But it doesn't mention that she grew up skiing in Vail, or attended at an elite Connecticut boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall (President Kennedy attended Choate) on scholarship when DelBene's stepfather found work as a pilot in Iran. For Christmas, DelBene got plane tickets to Iran.

(108,976 posts)And the step-father had to take a job in Iran to get by. And years later, the parents moved in with Suzan because they were still having financial problems.
You just don't want to admit that you were wrong. Going to Reed and Choat on scholarship doesn't make her any more elitist than Obama going to prep school and college on scholarship, or Darcy going to Harvard on scholarship.

(108,976 posts)to the eastside in those days, when my husband had a job transfer, and were surprised to discover that homes in Mercer Island and Bellevue were considerably cheaper than they were in middle class areas in Seattle. The eastside had this rich reputation but we were able to get a nicer house, in a close-in neighborhood, for a lot less money. Even Bill Gates's future neighborhood, Medina, was considerably less expensive than many neighborhoods in north Seattle.
And being a scholarship student at Choate and Reed just means she had a good education. She also got her graduate degree from U.W., but I don't see you making a big deal about that.

no objections to well-off people in politics, it's the way of the world, but spare me the horatio alger bullshit.

(108,976 posts)for middle class homes in Seattle vs. the eastside, or you wouldn't be making the statements you've been making.
And for some reason you don't mind Darcy's "horatio alger bullshit" but it kills you that Suzan also had a success story.
Sorry. Your candidate lost and it's a general election now.
P.S. I just noticed that you included Selma, Alabama as part of her elite upbringing. Selma? Seriously?

(20,729 posts)fun talking to you, but no more time to spend discussing how very very 'middle class' MI was in the 70s.
lol.
(though i suppose people who think medina was 'middle class' probably might think so. same kind of people who think you need $250K to be 'middle class' in nyc.)

(2,424 posts)I thought it would update for November.
I think it still may. I just linked you to the one I used for the primary. Don't know for sure.
So I'm voting for pot. Not sure of the details. Legalization, decriminalization, etc.
I can't drink alcohol. Can't stand what it does to me. But I sure would like to enjoy my impending retirement with some good smoke.
Can't do it now for a few reasons. It is illegal. My occupation rightfully can't allow it. My daughter has not moved out of the house yet.
I see all of those things changing in the near future....hopefully.

(11,449 posts)Both my husband and I didn't smoke pot for 25 yrs while we raised our kids. We retired 7 yrs ago and had some given to us while visiting in Canada. Never planned it or thought about it.
After that my husband got a card to be legal here in WA.
I hope it will pass but not counting on it. A lot of the patient places were telling people to vote no.
