Update on Dentists who happen to be assholes

Sometime ago I posted about A Facebook group to which I belong which is comprised entirely of dentists and dental personnel. I posited then that there was a decent size group, although a minority, of people on the site who were disciples of Trump, who were making the case that this pandemic responsewas an overreaction if not an outright hoax.

Well nothing has changed in this time. This information and lies and general stupidity is posted there routinely, and the moderator, Who claims that he disagrees with these individuals allows the postings. However when we attack these people and their absurd fallacious posts, He posits that we are not being constructive in our criticism, or some such infantile grade school response.

The funny part is, it got personal between two individuals, and one of the anti-sensibility people posted that he was much better looking than one of the people who is on our side. So I did a search online, found a photo of this asshole, and posted it next to the rather nice looking Facebook photo of the righteous fellow. The caption underneath which I wrote was one word: “Really?” I sent a PM to the board moderator and administrator and told him in no uncertain terms that if he strikes my post I’m going to exact revenge online, because he’s a rather public figure. I told him that I was sick and tired of his tolerance of stupidity, lies, inanity, and Advice which borders on the genocidal. The post stood.

Most people however, will not speak out against this stuff because they are, and it is typical on chat boards, afraid of the right wingers taking off after them. I have no such fear.

I have weathered the storm on a couple of conservative message boards. They eventually banned me. I challenged B.S. when I saw it and wouldn’t give up. I got ganged-up upon plenty, but I didn’t let that stop me.

Glad that you took a stand. It takes courage. It helps to go in with the attitude of The Black Knight from Monty Python’s “Holy Grail.” When your arm gets chopped off, just respond with “I’ve had worse.“

Generally they admit to adhering to protocols, because state boards, and health boards will shut you down in an instant if you don’t. In Pennsylvania, we were threatened with license revocation if we did not do what we were told to do, and make a fair attempt at such. In the early part of the pandemic we were told that if we practiced at all whatsoever we would have license revocation which is generally reserved literally for convicted murderers. I’m not exaggerating: if you rob the bank you would have Indefinite license suspension.

Just look at the latest Trump "expert" on COVID-19, a neuroradiologist with NO, ZERO, NADA Public Health, Epidemiology, Virology, Vaccinology, or Clinical Patient Care expertise WHATSOEVER.

and yet it is. There are no wins to political discussions or arguments on Facebook no matter the group or the setting. Again if you believe it is a good use of your time and enjoy it knock yourself out. I wouldn't engage in it but to each their own. That said, when you are done I guarantee there are still no wins, just more pissed off people.

Facebook activity isn't monolithic and bad people win when good people, like yourself, remain silent. I believe in being practical change agents and what you're doing is practical. You can make change one person at a time and may not even know that you have.

when they realize they are wrong, but are not willing to admit it.
It's meant to intimidate their opponent into backing down and/or shutting up.
It's a fear tactic.

Trump is very good at this, as are those people who are his most loyal supporters.
Using logic and reason is hard work. Spewing out anger and hatred, and shouting down your opponent is much easier and works pretty well.

They're counting on you not being willing to fight back...sort of like verbal rape.

This is Trump world.

I’m glad to hear contact tracing is happening. I’m waiting for the virus to bust loose down here now that school has started. Between school and the continued numbers of out of state folks here now...I can’t believe we won’t have an uptick in cases. I have never seen so many out of state license plates in my life. Sigh.

about professionals in medicine and other fields with advanced science backgrounds and higher education who adhere to the worst tenets of evangelical Christianity and support a monstrous executive and cadre causing mass destruction and havoc. Not to mention the antics of petty, juvenile assholes. But that's humans, some anyway.

As noted upthread, my grandfather was a dentist, a kind, skilled professional much loved by family and community, His instruments are at the Medical College of Pa.

Thanks and stay strong.

I inherited a bunch of instruments from the early 20th century from old dentists who retired And gave them to me because they didn’t know what else to do with them. It was a fascinating time for what was known as mechanical dentistry.
