All in---- is having a segment on herd immunity right now
@HillaryClinton
With a population of 328 million in the United States, it may require 2.13 million deaths to reach a 65 percent threshold of herd immunity, assuming the virus has a 1 percent fatality rate.
Lets not try out this strategy.

(6,110 posts)Not enough to cause either herd immunity or panic.

(13,903 posts)it doesn't matter how many people die out of 300 M, there will still be plenty of people to hate.
Christofascists are hyper-individualists. It has to be personal to matter to them. People will have to be dropping around them like flies before it will matter. 130K dead means as much to them as 20 dead children in Sandy Hook.
Just the price that must be paid for their convenience and satisfaction.

(2,957 posts)And if it was we'd all be doomed anyway. Covid-19 is thought to be like the cold, reinfection by a slightly mutated strain is possible, but in most cases doesn't lead to significant problems because the virus is no longer entirely "new" to the immune system.

(86,951 posts)the speculation category too.
The point is, there's no certainty about anything other than it will continue beyond next year at this time and should a reliable vaccine be developed, we might be able to get a better grip on it... then.

(18,014 posts)A few cases here and there, out of what? 25 million plus cases world wide is meaningless in drawing overall conclusions with regard to immunity. The thing about those few cases here and there....most of the time they turn out to have other compounding factors. Plus, viral infection isn't cut and dried. It isn't like being pregnant, ie. either you are or you aren't. It's messy sometimes. But overall, we can draw conclusions from the data that hold true over the vast number of cases. Plus...there's a tiny minority out there who, through a lucky roll of the DNA mutation dice, are completely immune to Covid-19. And a larger group who have only minor symptoms for the same reason. That's always the case with human pathogens. Also, there's some evidence that those who've had lots of vaccinations, frequent travelers to 3rd world countries for instance, have a primed immune system in some way that makes them less susceptible to Covid-19. One thing is certain, in 2 years time this will be the most studied pathogen in human history. Our knowledge and ability to handle another outbreak like this will be light years from where it was last winter.

(18,014 posts)The human immune system is extremely complex and much of its function is still unknown. Just because antibodies are relatively low in someone's bloodstream doesn't mean they've lost immunity. Most times it means the body has cleared the pathogen and there's no need for huge amounts of antibodies or other immune responses. But the immune system still remembers. There's been only a tiny handful of documented cases of possible reinfection. But that's far too few to draw any conclusions. As more data has become available, Covid-19 is acting just like any other coronavirus. Not some super bug from outer space. What worries me more than immunity is mutation. That's what made HIV so slippery and difficult to fight. Far different bug, but same concept. We are a 328 million host, gigantic petri dish for viral mutation. So even if a vaccine is produced early next year, we are not doing the vaccine makers or the rest of humanity any favors.

(2,957 posts)I'm sorry, but this is not life as it should be. Wearing masks everywhere, schools shut down, being afraid to visit our elders for fear of accidentally killing them, restaurants all gone, no concerts or live sports, etc. The only reason society as we know it hasn't crumbled is because the FED has the money printer on full steam.

(18,014 posts)And what do you mean by lasting? That's rarely the problem. Mutation is a far bigger problem in that regard. Thus, we vaccinate for flu every year. It's not that our immune system suddenly forgot what flu was. It's just never seen this year's version.
