"I thought you were part of the 'pro-life' crowd."
"So whatever happened to 'pro-life'?"
"And I'll bet you tell people you're 'pro-life'."
Pass it on!
You CANNOT claim you're "pro-life" if you embrace this shit - when this "herd immunity" crap means two-and-some MILLION people will have to die while that dumbfuck idea works its way through the system.
HANG the "pro-life" yowling around their miserable hypocritical necks like the proverbial noose. I'm talking to YOU, Dan Patrick...

(31,261 posts)I am thinking of an idea. Maybe the common cold coronaviruses were much deadlier for us in the way distant past, but mutated over many millennia into something that wont aggressively kill some of us. If that is what happened with common cold coronaviruses, then the question becomes how long will it take for SARS-COV-2 to mutate to something that wont aggressively kill some of us?

(81,110 posts)If I ever were to run into Dan Patrick, my comment to him, for that "our old people have a responsibility to die so the rest of us can live" would be: "You first, then!"

(236 posts)Yeah, pro-life indeed.
Edit: speaking of blathering on, I realize I did did that with this reply . Sorry - a couple of years reading, now feeling ready to post a bit - guess I couldnt stop myself from poring a bit of what Ive been thinking into this thread.
Im not out much, but Ive heard a few people saying the standard know-it-all line: we just need to get to heard immunity. The next time i have the opportunity, Id like to ask the speaker what they know about herd immunity. Ive read that experts are estimating that at least 70% of the population would have be infected to reach heard immunity. The cost - as the OP says - would most likely be 2 to 3 million dead. Given that, Id like to pose the question to someone blathering on about herd immunity, if they want to sign up their parents and grandparent to get infected and get the ball rolling. On top of this, I think we can still say that we dont really yet know what immunity even means with this virus.
Im sure the human impact of these herd immunity experts plans would also include millions of recovered with lasting heath issues - based on what we are learning about life after catching the virus. My speculation is that forcing heard immunity *could* put enough stress on health care providers and resources, that estimates of a death toll based on current fatality rates could be too low.
Of course there is the way that herd immunity has actually been reached in the past for different diseases - a combination of vaccines and people getting sick. It seems to me that this model, possibly along with some long term behavior modification, is the only sane way to have chance to reach herd immunity with this virus.
Maybe some thoughts to distill down into talking points :

Glad you weighed in, even while having been here for a little while.
Two thoughts come to mind, for addressing someone bleating about "herd immunity."
1) What does that even mean?
2) Okay, then. You first!

Thank you!
I never have good screen names. All credit goes to my daughter. She uses it as a wifi router name, and was all all for me using it here.

(3,781 posts)I get to use this line often these days. I recently used it when a MAGAt tried to tell me that "only old people die of Coronavirus." I looked at him and said, "I guess all lives don't matter anymore, then, do they?" He did NOT like that.

I think they really need to have this messaging shoved in their faces.
They're NOT "Pro-Life." They're pro-female-domination. Keeping women shackled to old ideas and dictates (usually issued by men) that are irrelevant, unrealistic, blatantly sexist, and thoroughly out-of-date by now. Woman, you MUST bear my precious almighty seed. To term. Without question, and regardless whether your life or circumstances can support the results.
