I see this type of behavior in regards to LGBT people, especially gay men and transpeople. We are told "oh, it's just a joke. get a grip! It's getting under so-and-so's (usually the POS in the WH) skin." The response you posted really drives it home with the accusation of "latent racism". That's what it is for some, for others, it is simply being unaware or not caring about the humanity of minorities they claim to be supporting. If you support a group, then DO NOT use them as the butt of a joke or as a basis for a slur.

I remember here when the topic of the Washington DC NFL team would come up for years and I was essentially told by not a few members to lighten up or there was silence. I'm all in for BLM, but there are others of us who suffer too (try being an Indian in northern Michigan) but we don't have the numbers or clout to really drive it home.
