2. I'm praying prosecutors should be able to see them, the fact that they might not have is a huge flaw

they won't be made public anyhow, at least unless there's a trial - and maybe not then.

If you think that presidential candidates should release their tax returns (or some reasonable summary of them), then you shouldn't vote for them if they refuse. Simple enough. But the law doesn't currently require it.

The two Trump tax cases are about whether a prosecutor can subpoena those records as part of an investigation, or a congressional committee can get them from the IRS as part of their planning for future legislation. In neither case would it be legal for the recipient to then release them for public view.
