It is not the first time the Russians have used this. It was most recently deployed in 2018 to poison Sergei and Yulia Skripal in England.
I'm surprised Nalvany survived.

(7,510 posts)You would think that Russian State Security operatives would be more competent than this.

(7,510 posts)Scientists who worked on the Novichok project disclosed details from 1992 onwards. They stated that the project goals included developing weapons that:
- could not be detected by the then standard NATO chemical weapons detection sensors
- have potential to circumvent the Chemical Weapons Convention
- would be easier to produce using methods and materials prevalent in pesticides industries
- were designed from the outset to be binary chemical weapons (where two relatively non-toxic materials are mixed together just before dispersal to minimise the danger to the personnel delivering the weapons).

It's unclear how widely the knowledge of their manufacture was disseminated in the chaos of the Yeltsin years.

(81,475 posts)Germany says Russias Navalny poisoned with nerve agent
By GEIR MOULSON
BERLIN (AP) Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with the same type of Soviet-era nerve agent that British authorities identified in a 2018 attack on a former Russian spy, the German government said Wednesday, citing new test results.
Chancellor Angela Merkels spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said in a statement that testing by a special German military laboratory at the Charites request had now shown proof without doubt of a chemical nerve agent from the Novichok group.
It is a dismaying event that Alexei Navalny was the victim of an attack with a chemical nerve agent in Russia, Seibert said. The German government condemns this attack in the strongest terms.
British authorities identified Novichok as the poison used in 2018 on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England. The nerve agent is a cholinesterase inhibitor, part of the class of substances that doctors at the Charite initially identified in Navalny.

(9,981 posts)To my knowledge, no other president has Geared being poisoned as Trump does. Thats why he eats fast food when hes out. Perhaps Putin has threatened him in one of their private phone chats.

(10,303 posts)... then Alexi Navalny's poisoning from a take-out tea served at an airport restaurant (probably quick service fast food) should make him think twice. However I don't know if Trump can think that far ahead. Maybe his diet never got much beyond the Happy Meal.

(36,788 posts)Trump owes Russia tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions.
When he is out of office, his job of useful tool is over.
Putin will come calling for payment.
Then Trump will have to worry about Polonium 210 and tea.

(19,979 posts)The sanctions placed on Russia after the Skripal poisoning with Novichok obviously did not deter Pooty. Is the tyrant getting desperate over the protests out east? "Czar for life" status being threatened, Poots? No doubt he's emboldened by the fealty of his weak little puppet in the White House.
