Trump compromised them all with the short term promise of Russian money, dangled the long term promise of permanent power, and threatened to destroy anyone who didn't fall in line. No other explanation makes sense.

Yes, there's other factors at play too, but they all seemed to be too scared to utter a peep about anything unless it's really extreme (i.e. delaying the election). Even then, the response was muted compared to "normal times".

I am sure Trump phrased the corrupt bargain in such a way as to have some kind of deniability, but the Senators (except maybe Flake, I forgot who else quit) all knew what he meant.

If Obama had done one fraction of one percent of the shit trump has done, they would have gone apeshit more times than one could imagine.

The difference is, they would have legit reason for a change. Something other than fake allegations about his country of origin, or wearing a tan suit.
