Several of my friends and I dressed in olive drab, strapped on our pistols, shouldered our

military style rifles and set out to confront "those damn commie bastards"!

It was 1957. We continued the game until the 2000 watt incandescent street lights came on and we had to go home for our baths.

WE outgrew the "let's play soldier" phase. RWNJs, not so much.

wondered what a "dawn surly" light was---as in, "Oh, say can you see---"

I guess I was slow because it took several years in Sunday school to realize that the title of the hymn was "Gladly the Cross I'd Bear", not "Gladly, the Cross-eyed Bear".

they were charging for uniforms that were left on the battle field, some with legs and arms still in them. I think they stopped doing that but can't say for sure.

Perhaps it was too soon. We played cowboys and Indians in the late 40s.
