General Discussion

I participate on a site for knitters/crocheters, where politics isnt a focus, but does get discussed especially over the past four years.
I quickly recognized that many posters were Trumpsters, who vociferously defended everything the Dotard said and did.
Imagine my shock when a I read the posts from a large number of them after their pResident refused to attend the ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France in commemoration of US soldiers and marines killed during WWI. These former Ever-Trumpers went absolutely ballistic, and vowed never to support him or vote for him again.
They were beyond furious. They said hed disgraced those who have died in service and the military as a whole, and had disgraced the country by failing to represent us at such an important event.
Of all the disgusting things hed already done by that point, it was THIS event that pushed many of them over the edge.
So if you think the suckers and losers story wont get to a lot of the Trump-humpers, think again. That quote is going to leave a mark.

(27,813 posts)... were members of his base.
That base has been eroding from day one. People have been turned around due to different issues: kids in cages, a promised middle-class tax-cut that turned out to be pennies, and now his response to Covid-19.
We always hoped there'd be some action or event that would cause a landslide of Trump desertions, but that didn't happen. However, the erosion has been steady and constant - a handful here, a group or two there - over time, it adds up.

(22,478 posts)DELRAY BEACH, FLa. (AP) A new report details multiple instances of President Donald Trump making disparaging remarks about members of the U.S. military who have been captured or killed, including referring to the American war dead at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France in 2018 as losers and suckers.
The allegations were first reported in The Atlantic. A senior Defense Department official with firsthand knowledge of events confirmed some of the remarks to The Associated Press, including the 2018 cemetery comments.
The defense official said Trump made the comments as he begged off visiting the cemetery outside Paris during a meeting following his presidential daily briefing on the morning of Nov. 10, 2018.
Staffers from the National Security Council and the Secret Service told Trump that rainy weather made helicopter travel to the cemetery risky, but they could drive there. Trump responded by saying he didnt want to visit the cemetery because it was filled with losers, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

So he will do as his is told and sow chaos, doing everything he can to destroy the foundation of this country. Because his sugar daddy Putin has given him his marching orders.
His response is, "Just how high must I goose step, dear fuehrer?"

Cirque du So-What
(25,932 posts)Call me naive, but I think decent folk would be pissed about a politician implying that POWs are losers, whether or not John McCain was the subject.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... and it's a valid one. I always took that remark about McCain to be an insult to all POWs.
However, I think a lot of Trumpsters dismissed it as merely a personal affront to McCain because he was a political adversary, and chose not to see it as having any meaning beyond that.
I think the Atlantic story is going to disabuse a lot of people of that notion.

It won't hurt him with his core base, but could with soft Trump supporters and especially right-leaning swing voters.

(82,849 posts)Trump is now trying to say that he's been nothing but the best friend of veterans, including John McCain, and Trump's magnanimous gesture in lowering the flags to half staff when McCain died. As if that wasn't the absolute least he could do for a public servant of such long standing. Trump's trying to scramble out from under this story. We'll see how successful he is.

(27,813 posts)... every Trumper. They're not a monolithic group - they are individuals. Some of them are like your plumber - but some of them are not.
If all Trump-humpers thought and acted in unison, Trump wouldn't be losing in the polls as badly as he is. We're two months from the GE, and he's struggling to win back members of his own 'base' that have deserted him.
Your plumber sounds like the classic "lost cause" - but there are Trumpsters out there who aren't completely out of reach.

(5,722 posts)Years from now people are going to look at videos of Generalissimo Corpulente's disdainful smeeeerk during his flag-molesting moments and ask, "How the hell did anyone fall for such obvious bullshit?"
But yeah, "I don't like the leopard anymore because it finally got around to eating MY face" doesn't make anybody a better person, the climax of Return of the Jedi be damned. I'm happy they're turning on him, but they remain untrustworthy, ignorant, absolutely shitty people. The next furriner-hating violence-stoking rapist teevee celebrity to promise them a tax cut will have them all right back on their hands and knees, groveling at his feet.

(14,886 posts)I don't have the patience for big stuff bedspreads, afghans, nor the skills or (and probably patience) for fancy lace shawls (though I drool over them ) .
I have a shawl I started but know sure where it is.
My biggest project was a Big cowl: 33" wide and about 23" high using 3 strands if chunky yarn together.
I have a bug enough staff for 2-3 yrs years worth of projects especially since drawing is my predominant Art making, and unique silver plated wire jewelry is my main Craft making outlet. Still I live to make modest things for my self in yarn. Occasional gifts, too
As far as Feminist knitting - nothing different. I think it was a way to gather in feminist women who also knit, or crochet. There's a spinner's group that I love to swoon over their yarn making. Such gorgeous colors!
What do you make?

This last response to me is rather snippy and condescending.
I was trying to share a little joy and creativity on the side while we -all- struggle with the either generally horribly underacknowledged issues now finally brought into more light while being exascerbated by drumph, or the new problems he has unleased on this country, and the world. Since we each are going through at various times stages, waves of sorrow, rage, and fear because of all of this.
So, sorry THIS little string of questions and comments aggravated you.

(27,813 posts)... this discussion was about Trumpsters and their reaction to Trump's disrespect for the military. It was NOT about knitting.
