I could really use a hug... My Dad died a number of years ago..He was regular army in WW2

I remember coming into DU and talking about his passing.. How he was the one who had pointed out that young Senator from IL Barack Obama to me.. he was going to be our next President, Dad said. He had seen his speech about one America at the Democratic Convention.. he was so impressed.. He did not make it .. He died in July and Sen Obama was elected President that November.. He was a wonderful person, who kept reliving his war years the final couple of years of his life. I stood by his flag covered coffin, this man who waded through the blood in the water of his friends as he charged Omaha Beach. I was so proud of his service.. So proud that he kept going when the demons of those lost souls in that war haunted him. Why he got to come home, but they didn't would bring him to tears.

With the story that came out today about Trump calling those who served losers .. I feel gut punched. That the President had so little concern and respect for those who served. Those who saved the world.. I feel sick to heart

Any man who fought on Omaha beach was in no way average. Hero is the word that comes to mind.

I am glad for you memories. My dad fought in Korea but he never talked about it. Only after he passed did I learn about what he went thru. He died at 55 from a heart attack. Always wonder if his memories played a role in that.

Have a nice weekend.

My Mom worked for the DoD. In 2004 - when Obama was running for Senate - I kept seeing posts right here on DU about some guy with a funny name. I thought, who the hell is this they keep talking about? So I went to the Obama website, and right there on the page was that beautiful photo of he and Michelle sitting on the grass, with Malia and Sasha draped around them. And I thought - holy smokes, THIS is going to be the first black president of the United States! I didn't even read his policies or opinions, that photo said it all... I just immediately printed the photo, ran into the living room, and said, "Ma, look! Look at this! This man will be the first black president of the United States, I swear!"

She got to see him make that speech at the convention, but she didn't make it past the next spring. I'm so sorry she didn't get to see this man and his lovely family in the WH for 8 years.

Big hug to you.

My grandfather (mom's side) was a Navy vet of WWII, my stepfather Korea Marine, my brother Army Viet Nam. Thankfully, none were injured physically, but all were injured mentally. None really talked about their service, except my brother. He would talk about when he was stationed in Germany and Thailand, but never about when he was actually in Viet Nam. I have pictures of my grandfather on his ship goofing around with his buddies... He was the chief cook. When he got out of the service, he opened a restaurant with my grandmother. He was so smart. I remember sitting with him and doing the daily crossword in both English and German. His parents had immigrated to the US in the 20's from Germany. I remember in 7th grade, when I was called into the principal's office the day he died, and sent home from school... I still miss him so much.

My dad served in the Pacific Island war and I was very proud of his service and remember standing beside his flag draped casket too. I also remember how proud he was when I joined the Navy during the Vietnam War. My dad was severely haunted by his war and PTSD made sure it was his war, and he was in and out of VA mental hospitals trying to deal with it, throughout my life, until he passed. Your post just made me think about it all, so, hugs to you.
