In our travels, my wife Lorrie and I have always made it a point to visit military bases, hospitals and cemeteries, to meet and honor those who serve and have served our nation.
I have long known that serving a cause greater than oneself is the highest calling, whether in the military or in civilian life. And I have always tried to be a voice of reason and to speak in a measured way.
But this situation calls for a much more direct approach. It is time to call out egregious behavior for what it is.
For the first time in American history, a president has repeatedly shown utter and vulgar contempt and disrespect for those who have served and died serving our country.
While I am not surprised, I am disgusted by the current occupant of the Oval Office. He has repeatedly and consistently shown himself to be completely unfit for and to have no respect for the office he holds.
He took an oath of office that is similar to the one that each person takes who enters the U.S. Military. But he has completely failed to uphold his oath.
Now we know why. He has admitted that he cannot comprehend the concept of service above self.
He cannot understand selflessness because he is selfish. He cannot conceive of courage because he is a coward. He cannot feel duty because he is disloyal.
We owe it not only to those who have served and sacrificed for our nation, but to ourselves and to succeeding generations to vote him out.

(26,044 posts)I am a veteran. I volunteered for military service during wartime. So did my father. His generation saved the world from fascism.
What else would you expect from such an anti-American family?

(2,072 posts)Not child separations or 200K dead by way of willful neglect. Every. Fucking. Day. This monster says something horrible like this: "I like people who weren't captured," "grab them by the pussy," "shit hole countries," "very fine people on both sides," Mexicans are "rapists." Or how about when he bragged about having the tallest building after the World Trade Center collapsed? If words are all it takes he should have been gone from our public view with the Central Park Five episode or Birther-ism.

(2,690 posts)this disdain and contempt for the military affects every family in the country, either directly or through extended family or friends. The people who laughed at the pussy grabbing reference -- "haha, just boys talking' in the locker room" -- the racists who were fine with Trump's characterizations of Mexicans as rapists and drug dealers, with African nations as "shithole countries -- the people who thought his lies were just a cute character trait (not flaw!) -- all of them know someone who served, or know someone who knows someone who served, someone's father or cousin or grandfather or granddaughter.
So, yeah, this is the tipping point because it is, finally, one that will absolutely piss off the vast majority of people whose brains are sufficiently clear enough to trust the report and the supporting sources that are surfacing in its wake. As for the rest, the drooling cultists, fuck them, one and all. Trump's loathing of the military and his disparagement of those who were maimed in combat, who died in combat may, finally, be the thing that helps unite us as a nation again.

(2,690 posts)Trump has claimed that he has his military to protect him -- and the thought of Trump bunkered down in the WH after Biden's victory ,while a divided military saw numbers of troops and tanks and choppers lined up to defend him, sent chills down my spine. But how many active duty military are willing to soil their souls defending a POS who has declared them all to be "suckers" and "loser"?
If Caesar's troops heard, after the Rubicon crossing, heard that he thought they were all losers and suckers, the Senate would not have been needed to finish him off because he would never even have reached Rome.

(2,690 posts)I went to 'Nam -- my handle kinda gives it away -- much like Oliver Stone did: to find out if the war was really as wrong as my friends felt it was. As it turned out, they were right: the war was insane, bad, murderous, and hopeless. The Generals in charge were giving the public a song and dance, the politicians kept on talking about lights at the end of the tunnel. All I knew was that the Vietnamese, the farmers and the Saigon shop keepers, even the bar girls, were having their lives ruined by the awful destruction America was generating.
Unlike Stone, I wasn't infantry. But I saw enough ugliness and insanity to give me nightmares and to honor forever the guys whose luck or choice led them into the midst of the fighting. I cried when I saw Stone's "Platoon." It hit home and hard.
I knew Trump had no deep respect for the soldiers doing the often dirty and always dangerous work of fighting. But I had not realized just how soulless and callous and cold this Orange creature was until the Atlantic article and subsequent corroborations. His utter lack of a human soul and any trace compassion is not just disgusting, it's actually frightening. We are a nation led by a psychopath.

Think tump would have done that? That selfish bastard would have been first out screaming get him to the shore and forget everyone else.

(17,108 posts)Here's my lead-in - I also cited New York, since the mere mention of New York makes them all purple with rage. Maybe there's some way I can factor Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez into it so I can leverage the blood pressure spikes:
Have a problem with this? Take it up with Sully.
Sully Sullenberger- Hero Air Force fighter pilot and airline captain who landed a disabled Airbus A320 in New York's Hudson River and saved all 155 people aboard calls out Donald Trump as "completely unfit for and to have no respect for the office he holds."
Here's his complete burn statement, with the link:

(1,646 posts)That you couldn't even get elected to public office unless you are veteran. Even if you scale it back to a member of your family was a veteran, Trump fails. There's a Heinlein book that proposes you must have served to be able to vote. That's looking better and better to me.
