River has been cleaned up and damns removed. Runs through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, lots of kayakers. This is a little south of park.

Unless that is how you identify fuel tankers driving on adjacent highways.

This was not existing river pollution - but the result of an MVA which caused a fuel tanker to crash and burn - and, since the river was adjacent the highway . . .

Truck crashed causing its contents to spill and burn, some of it went into storm drain an subsequently onto the river. Burned off pretty quick.

Cleveland - a respected city before 1968 - became the laughing stock of comedians and sit coms for decades. On many many shows, Cleveland was the joke. People my age have not forgotten it, and the city itself is still sensitive about it.

Younger generations won't see it that way - movies are now filmed here - The Deerhunter, A Christmas Story, Spiderman 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers, Antwone Fisher, The Fortune Cookie, Fate of the Furious, Acts of Violence... Won't even go with the Official ESPN Cleveland Sports Disaster List - LeBron took care of that one. So no, it's rarely joked about any more.

But it was ridiculously common, and made the city's image self-conscious. And I still get pissed cuz I'm old and remember.

can make a statement about Cleveland. Where did that come from, biased relatives, fucked up history books? I am much older and only know of rivers burning in Cleveland from pictures and legend. I also know that water around Cleveland (the river and Great Lake) are in very good shape today. I have never spent time in Cleveland proper because given my field, there is not much for me there. But I have spent time in the airport waiting for connecting flights, the local workers seemed decent and efficient and the airport terminal that I connected through appeared fairly modern and well maintained.

Cleveland is a great American industrial city that went through a hard transition as industries died. It appears to have spring in it’s step in recent years due to the hard work of local citizen and local business people. It was never a dumpster, down on it’s luck yes, but the local people have done a lot to turn that around.

I was born here, and have never understood the mockery the city took for many years. We had some hard times, but the city is in good shape, and continues to grow. We have one of the important art museums here - the Cleveland Museum of Art exchanges works of art with the Louvre, Prado - and hell, I just googled for it's reputation, and Business Insider rated it #2 in the country, only behind New York's Metro. Hell yeah! Great symphony, one of the greenest cities in the nation with all the connecting parks... it's a great place to live, but not if you like a raucous night life - now that we don't have. But I love it here, will retire here, and will always defend my city.

Urban planning seems to be thoughtful (sports complexes in the same general part of town that revitalized the area around them. I like the interior of the airport (although approaches over a big A lake takes some getting used it) I have found whatever I needed when in it and it was comfortable).

I haven't been to the airport in a long time - use to travel a lot, but didn't have the money for a decade - and now I have too many dogs & cats to go anywhere! But thank you, very glad to hear that! Next time my Cavs are in the playoffs (or Indians or Browns) come on down! We're a great city for big sports events!

If a fuel tanker crashes and burns, it doesn't matter how clean the adjacent river is - it's gonna burn.

That is very different from the scenario 5 decades ago

dumped into it on a regular basis, during a time when rivers were considered good conduits for disposing of chemicals and inadequately treated sewage. People in Cleveland should be proud of where the city is headed today, it has a renowned medical organization, and a good connections airport, of the things that I know a little about.

like artificial intelligence and state of the art robotics. I have only been through Cleveland to take connecting flights, so I have never set foot in the city itself. But from what I understand, it has a world renowned medical institution and there is almost surely technology and research offshoot from that. Plus, the guy that started Quicken Loans has led efforts that have put a lot of venture capital money into the city. It doesn’t appear to be the down on it’s heels post-industrial city of the 60s and 70s.

Cleveland and Pittsburgh used to have an intense football rivalry - "I hate the Browns!" and "I hate the Steelers!" used to be the thing, but Pittsburgh is actually our sister city. Many families have relatives in the other city - I did, it was where my grandparents lived, multiple visits my entire childhood - very fond memories. And you are right about Dan Gilbert and Quicken Loans. He got into trouble when LeBron left and he gave him hell in that letter he wrote (only media outside the city didn't like it ) but he has done a lot for both Cleveland and Detroit, the latest of which the Q (now Rocket Mortgage Field House) will be a polling center for the election. Tipping my hat to Gilbert.
