(CNN)Long election nights are what make junkies go wild and partisans go crazy. It's been 144 years since the Electoral College (how we decide our presidents) was last decided by a mere 1 electoral vote.
Chances are that whoever wins the presidency will have a more comfortable margin than winning by the skin of their teeth. Still, there are a number of different maps where either President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden wins the presidency with just 270 electoral votes, or where the two of them each get 269 electoral votes.
Below are just some of the realistic scenarios where Biden or Trump ends up at either 270 or 269 electoral votes. There are more, but this gives you insight into how it could happen.

I my opinion I do not see any of this playing out..................

The Dems have several paths to 270, whereas the repukes need all solid, likely, leaning red, all the toss up states and at least 40 votes from the leaning dem column. Granted, they have FL in the leaning dem which I think is too much to hope for, but even with that..take a look for yourself

(15,381 posts)Biden wins by 271-269. Two Electors are faithless and switch to Trump. Trump then wins 271-269. Nothing at all we can do.

(25,841 posts)to be an elector, vote for Trump? That is not going to happen. There has never been a "faithless" elector whose vote altered the outcome of the election. Never.

(15,381 posts)But it certain could have happened in 2000, I think that one was like 272-268. In 2016 there was a record number of faithless electors.

Personally, neither these "it could happen" pieces will cost me any sleep.

(25,841 posts)Just like at the beginning of primary season people breathlessly predict a brokered convention.
It's not going to happen.
