CONCORD, N.H. A four-term Republican state lawmaker is facing a state Department of Justice investigation and a call by the Democratic House speaker to resign over a Facebook post he wrote this week that advocated burning and looting homes owned by Black Lives Matter supporters.
Rep. James Spillane of Deerfield could not be reached for comment on his since-deleted post, which stated:
Public Service Announcement: If you see a BLM sign on a lawn its the same as having the porch light on for Halloween. Youre free to loot and burn that house.
Assistant Attorney General Sean Locke, director of the Department of Justice Civil Rights Unit, wrote in a letter to House Speaker Stephen Shurtleff, D-Penacook, earlier Thursday that his office has received multiple complaints about the post.
Lockes letter continued: In that post, Rep. Spillane invited individuals who opposed the Black Lives Matter movement to perpetrate acts of trespass and property damage against property owners who have displayed lawn signs that support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Members of the public who support the Black Lives Matter movement have expressed fear that they may become targets of violence as a result of Rep. Spillanes post.
