"When will we have a majority on the Supreme Court that cares more about the republic than about Republicans?"
(I wish I had the answer to that one)

(11,885 posts)And it will be, that trump has been trying to corrupt the Supreme Court justices by offering bribes , threats of blackmail , or other means for his political gain. Then we might have true justice return once those corrupted are gone. Was Justice Kennedy's leaving from his son being involved with loans to trump?

(702 posts)We need a term limit on them...no more than 10 years.
Representatives -2 years/4 terms
Senators -6 years/ 2 terms
President -4 years/ 2 terms
Supreme justice -10years/ 1 time only(10 and done)
Problem solved---the court changes regularly over time, when one side is in power
they have a numerical advantage, next election the other side has it...but it changes
every 2 years so there is no clogging the court with one side or the other, advantage
shifts back and forth every 2 years...simple. I think a system like this will attract
a different kind of candidate. And then that poor girl Justice Ginsberg could retire already,
poor thing...she's tired...let her rest.
Our system of government is good but simple adjustments can be made for the better.
Our govt. needs to be more flexible. But first we need to rip control out of the hands of
the fascist's that are currently trying make a new Reich.

(1,204 posts)Other than for the Presidency and Supreme Court, I could see having Senators and MC (Members of Congress) held to 2 consecutive terms but they would be allowed to run after taking a break for one term.
Due to the cost of running for office, MC could have 3 year terms instead of 2, but still would have a limit of 2 or 3 consecutive terms.
And Justice Ginsberg.....talk about being a Hero of the Republic? She's my hero.
So true. The rulings on Florida 2000 and Citizens United have killed our republic. Like Lazarus, we will have to literally raise it from the dead in order to survive in any semblance of a decent country.

(5,126 posts)but I have no desire to 'raise it from the dead'. This country is far from the virtuous example we have fostered on the rest of the world in our ridiculous quest for empire. I want things to move forward, not to fall back on an insane falsehood created to make this country seem more important than it is. I also learned over time that 'decent' usually means 'how I want everything to go and screw anyone who thinks otherwise'. Progressive means making progress, not falling back into old propaganda that masks a rotten and decadent culture. Yes, those rulings damaged our means of easily correcting the issues in our society right now, but the death you mention did not start there, nor were those decisions the real reason for it. The pompus nature of our society precludes any real logic and reason. There is no progress without reason and common sense. Both are sorely missing from our society and that loss did not just suddenly happen.
