Grand baby's surgery is over and one more tiny heart is pumping and thumping in near perfect rhythm. Though the next 48-72 hours will be important, the surgeon was very pleased with the result. Cassandra's vitals are all positive and strong; this little one is feisty, has been from day 1.
Anyway, thank you for all the prayers, blessings and good wishes. Means a lot. In fact, many of your replies had me welling up with emotion. I tend to be a cry baby.
Cassandra still has a journey ahead of her but she has just scrambled over a very tall obstacle. The rest of the road looks easy-peasy in comparison.
What a relief!
Thanks once again.

(12,482 posts)As you can well imagine, this outcome is a huge relief. I've contacted the various prayer groups working in Cassandra's behalf, many of whom were waiting on pins and needles for the results. People started calling and texting this morning around 9am; it's been a whirlwind of anxiety and anticipation.
But then, there's the happy, happy result! Everything we could have hoped for this little bit's survival and future life.
I told my son that when Cassandra is old enough to understand, he needs to press the idea that after her rough start there isn't anything she cannot do, cannot conquer.
Looking forward to see who she becomes. Looking forward to that glass of wine I deserve, too.

(29,589 posts)It's easy to say - from a virtual distance - that these surgeries are common and have a good success rate, but it's very different when it's your family and your experience. I hope she lives a long and healthy life after this.

(8,695 posts)i am always amazed at how skilled surgeons are at being able to operate on the heart of a tiny baby and correct congenital defects. Hopefully your granddaughter is out of the woods and has a bright future ahead of her.

(14,589 posts)rest of the backstory:
When doctors told us our premie son, still in the NICU, had that heart problem, I had to sit down. I had an older sister that never lived beyond a few months old due to that heart condition. That was back in the 1950's.
The doctor looked at my ashen face, and hurriedly added, "Oh this operation is routine now"
I am happy for you, that it all went well for little Cassie.
