South Dakota Governor Dismisses Sturgis Motorcycle Rally COVID-19 Outbreak As 'Fiction'

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has dismissed a report suggesting the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was a "superspreading event" for COVID-19 that cost billions of dollars in health costs.

Researchers from the Center for Health Economics and Policy Studies at San Diego State University in California claimed event, which attracted nearly 500,000 visitors, may have resulted in 266,796 new coronavirus cases—nearly 20 percent of the 1.4 million new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the U.S. between August 2 and September 2.

The annual event, which ran from August 7 to August 17, did not enforce social distancing guidelines and the wearing of masks in the was were not mandatory. Photographs show large crowds spilling out into the streets from Sturgis' bars, with an outdoor concert by the band Smash Mouth also taking place at the rally.

The study described how the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally saw many of "worst-case scenarios" for superspreading occurring simultaneously.

Why don't you invite a few over to the Governor's mansion then?

Fucking berk!

Fucking death cult.

Civil war, regardless of what happens in 2020 election-wise, is inevitable. The Rethugs and Rump taking back the House and holding the Senate and POTUS only speeds it up. Too many tens of millions of brainwashed and violent gits are too far gone to deprogramme.

Yes. She should be recalled/Impeached/Removed.

So should The Governor of Iowa, who insists schools open with full capacity in spite of Ames (ISU) and Iowa City (U of Iowa) being this month's hotspot.

So should the Governor of West Virginia. And the Governor of Florida. And the Governor of Georgia...

12 weeks of shelter in lace and mandatory masks in public in March, April, May, June, and we'd have nice things, like Europe and Australia.

is more destructive than 9-11.

There's no other way to look at it. There are hundreds of thousands of infections stemming from the rally and there will surely be thousands of deaths from it as well.

South Dakota decided to hold this event despite full knowledge of how bad it would likely be and without any reasonable safety measures in place.

SOUTH DAKOTA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS.

Any state, family, business, etc that has been impacted by COVID spread during the Sturgis Rally should sue the state of South Dakota.

Pretend it doesn't exist, and it all goes away.

I feel sorta/kinda bad for the folks who went to Sturgis, mostly because their brains don't work right and their sense of self-preservation is stunted. But I feel really bad for the family and friends of these knuckleheads who brought the plague back home and who will be infected because of their social proximity to such idiots.

Wonder how she is dealing with her number one Campaign Cash Supporter,T Denny Sanford and his Federal charge of Felony Child Pornography. Premier Bank and Sanford Medical Campus in Souix Falls are the major players in that State.

one of the authors of the study was on Chris Hayes and stated that she's completely wrong. They compared actual numbers from actual counties before and after Sturgis. The counties that did not have a significant presence in Sturgis had relatively unchanged Covid cases. The counties that did have a significant presence in Sturgis are experiencing much higher Covid cases.

...I don't buy the number either.
Given the lack of major mitigation nationwide, an event adding over 200,000 cases should have statistically significantly increased over national daily case load.
In fact, the slope of the cumulative case numbers was more steeply upward the 3 weeks before Sturgis, than the 3 weeks after.
If one looks at Worldometer's daily case bar chart, and engage the 7 day moving average option, the trend line is actually dropping slightly.
A spreader event as bad as claimed would not have led to a lower daily average. That outcome is so improbable as to be functionally impossible.
They say they're using direct data. Yes, from anonymous cell phone tracking. But, I question the quality of their case data given the findings don't square with the overall data trends.
