Another devastating part of the Woodward interviews

‘This is deadly stuff’: tapes show Donald Trump acknowledging coronavirus threat in February

US president discussed disease with China’s Xi Jinping and was aware of danger, journalist Bob Woodward reveals in new book

US President Donald Trump acknowledged the “deadly” nature of the coronavirus earlier this year in a series of recorded interviews with The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, even as the White House sought to dismiss the disease’s threat to Americans amid its initial outbreak across the United States.
Recounting a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump told Woodward on February 7 that the coronavirus is “more deadly than your, you know, your – even your strenuous flus”.
“This is more deadly,” he added. “This is five per – you know, this is 5 per cent versus 1 per cent and less than 1 per cent, you know. So, this is deadly stuff.”

<snip>
On Jan. 22, two days after Chinese officials first publicized the serious threat posed by the new virus ravaging the city of Wuhan, the chief of the World Health Organization held the first of what would be months of almost daily media briefings, sounding the alarm, telling the world to take the outbreak seriously.

But with its officials divided, the W.H.O., still seeing no evidence of sustained spread of the virus outside of China, declined the next day to declare a global public health emergency. A week later, the organization reversed course and made the declaration.

Those early days of the epidemic illustrated the strengths and weaknesses of the W.H.O., an arm of the United Nations that is now under fire by President Trump, who on Tuesday ordered a cutoff of American funding to the organization.

With limited, constantly shifting information to go on, the W.H.O. showed an early, consistent determination to treat the new contagion like the threat it would become, and to persuade others to do the same. At the same time, the organization repeatedly praised China, acting and speaking with a political caution born of being an arm of the United Nations, with few resources of its own, unable to do its work without international cooperation.

Mr. Trump, deflecting criticism that his own handling of the crisis left the United States unprepared, accused the W.H.O. of mismanaging it, called the organization “very China-centric” and said it had “pushed China’s misinformation.”

Joe Biden: Trump is worst possible leader to deal with coronavirus outbreak
President has blithely tweeted that 'it will all work out well.' Yet the steps he has taken have only weakened our capacity to respond.

Joe BidenOpinion contributor

The possibility of a pandemic is a challenge Donald Trump is unqualified to handle as president. I remember how Trump sought to stoke fear and stigma during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. He called President Barack Obama a “dope” and “incompetent” and railed against the evidence-based response our administration put in place — which quelled the crisis and saved hundreds of thousands of lives — in favor of reactionary travel bans that would only have made things worse. He advocated abandoning exposed and infected American citizens rather than bringing them home for treatment.

Trump’s demonstrated failures of judgment and his repeated rejection of science make him the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health challenge.

The outbreak of a new coronavirus, which has already infected more than 2,700 people and killed over 80 in China, will get worse before it gets better. Cases have been confirmed in a dozen countries, with at least five in the United States. There will likely be more.

He's weakened our government at every juncture of his decision making process unless someone in his Admin or a Hannity convinced him otherwise.

He put the worst, more unqualified people in his Cabinet and at all levels of government he cared to pay attention to but let Mc Turtle and co pick the most extreme, partisan hacks in place to pack the Courts. I guess Vlad really didn't care about that detail enough to get involved.

It's going to take awhile to get that garbage out of there. Hopefully, they're just as corrupt and money grubbing as the rest and can be caught and removed for bribery, etc.

I doubt that there are many undecided voters at this point. But there may be a lot of people deciding just not to vote at all. Trump has managed to create doubt about mailed ballots counting and voting in person carries virus risks. We already have one of the lowest voting rates of developed countries. Only about 50% of eligible voters bothered to vote in 2016, and there was no pandemic roaming around then.

Those of us who pay attention to politics are highly motivated. I hope more people get motivated to vote by the revelations in Woodward’s book. It’s the young people and the independents whose votes are needed. Democrats are motivated.

I guess what's important is where the "here and there" are. By some models that I read, something like 39,000 votes determined the outcome of the election. So all we need is to have, say, 100,000 people change their minds. But they need to be in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Sep 2020

Chump and his evil son-in-law were looking for ways to enrich themselves from the pandemic, before anyone else knew there was something to be worried about.

The two of them looked for ways to make money on the stock market and big pharma. They also redirected orders for ventilators and PPEs because China wanted to buy from us. How else could they have cancelled orders for US hospitals and medical clinics and shipped ventilators to China? It was because they KNEW! How did they become stockholders in certain pharmaceutical companies that stood to make huge profits? Because they KNEW!

They also shared the information secretly with certain Repukes in the Senate who cashed their stocks out only one or 2 days before the announcement, and Wall Street started tanking. They KNEW too!

The whole thing makes me sick.

30. What We Need To Do
Thu Sep 10, 2020, 10:16 AM
Sep 2020

Is to reshore the manufacturing capacity for PPE so we’re not beholden to other countries for our vital needs. As recently as February, more than 90% of all masks were made in China, and guess what? They had a pressing need for them.

The same for gloves, gowns and other items too. Meltblown fiber is a common component for masks and gowns, and most of that capability has also been offshored.

US companies are willing to bring these things back, but they need protection once this pandemic has ended.

FakeNoose

40. Yes they cancelled orders that were destined for NY hospitals
Thu Sep 10, 2020, 10:38 AM
Sep 2020

... and California hospitals I believe. Perhaps the NY hospitals get better pricing when they combine their orders. As I understand it, hospitals only order once or twice per year, so the PPE items were ordered before the pandemic hit. Then it became an emergency and the hospitals needed the stuff ASAP, and they found out that Chump and Jared had cancelled their orders! The ventilators and PPEs were resold or redirected to China, and I'm sure a kickback or illegal profit was involved.

I only remember what I read in the news back in March or April, so maybe someone else on DU might have better (insider) info. If I'm wrong about this, please correct me. I'm relying on memory, and a lot has happened in the last 6 months.

And to be filled with hate, fear, hostility, rage and revenge. He feeds off it.

Announcing Covid 19 would not have done that, it's a different kind of crisis, generating a different kind of panic. It might have affected the stock market, but there's more to it.

It's been suggested by many that he/they reasoned it would hit worse in cities, which are mostly Democratic; and in congested areas, where many of the poor, the immigrants, the people of color are living.

Others have pointed out that he and his closest minions were planning how they could profit from this, instead of planning how to manage it and minimize the contagion and serve the American public. And then they made their profits and created havoc.

It is all unbelievable to me (like I'm living in an alternate universe), but totally believable if I think about how awful and evil and traitorous the POS liar and chief is. Capable of the worst!

is that they knew of course it was deadly. They did nothing because they thought most of the deaths would be minorities in urban blue areas. Trump and Kushner thought that primarily anti-Trump voters would die from it, so why get in the way of something that works for their interest? That's the way their high-functioning rodent brains work. Notice that mr Trump didn't put on a mask until red state covid casualties started piling up? This pretty much nukes the "both parties are the same" charade. Leftists that keep mouthing that need the shut the fuck up.....now. If Obama had to deal with a health crisis that mostly affected red states, he would deal with it right away.....because he would have thought it's his job as would Biden.
