Democrats, OPEN THE SCHOOLS ( SAFELY), NOW! When schools are closed, let the money follow the child (FAMILY). Why should schools be paid when they are closed? They shouldnt!

Teachers are dying, students are getting sick and we still don't know the long term effects of Covid 19 on children. It's insanity to reopen schools in districts that are experiencing these circumstances.

(2,636 posts)He's politicized everything. He is a pathological liar, and his choices are killing us.
He wants schools open for babysitting so that parents have no reason not to return to work, where it's likely also not safe. He wants school open if it's safe, yet he's offered no plan, no guideline, no criteria for what safe is. He does not care about anyone but himself.
Democrats don't run school districts. Local boards of education do. Colleges have opened, and Greek life and dorms are petri dishes.
Criminal negligence and attempted homicide.

(732 posts)I have one daughter in-law, and one former co-worker who are demanding schools reopen. They want them open because their children are not doing well with home schooling. They speak of tantrums, no support, unable to complete tasks etc. One has just about decided to remove her child for the year because of the strife it is causing at her house (3rd grade). The other has given up on attempting to track if their kid is "in school" or just goofing on the computer when her back is turned (high school).
So the elementary ager, is just not having it, and per the parent, no support, no receiving of the chrome book, yet, only "streaming device is a cell phone", so they just have some work sheets sent to their house. The high schooler, well unless she sits in the room with him the entire time he is off and playing games on the computer, not school work.
I can see their problems, they are not teachers, the kid, she wants the interaction, and mom is no teacher. The teenager, well just like many other teens, will treat the home schooling like every day is substitute teacher day.
Edit to add, I think home schooling is the best option, but it is not a good fit, for many families or students.
Edit 2, forgot to add, in both these cases the mom can stay home all day. One is a stay at home parent, the other is a work from home. What about all the parents who have to work away from home.
I don't have the solution, schools open, more spread, schools closed can also cause major problems, from unemployment, to no education at all due to parents inability to supervise - lead in education.

(2,636 posts)Children whose parents support and prioritize education will do fine under distance learning. Children whose parents don't support and prioritize education will struggle.
The third grader would be best served memorizing her times tables and reading out loud for 20 minutes everyday. D0 that for a year, and your child will improve two grade levels in a year. Learn to multiply and divide, and algebra becomes real easy.
The high schooler is a different story, but again, the parent needs to parent, not necessarily teach. Teenagers want money to spend and drivers licenses. Bribery works.
Not solong ago, homeschooling was the answer, and K12 and other online virtual schools, because the "government schools" were all failing. Nary a peep from the failing schools folks, and the notion that homeschooling is superior is wholly dependent on the parents.
We could have shut down and masked up through June, and we'd have sports, and in class school and some sense of normal. But the impeached pResident chose to lie about COVID to prevent a stock market panic.
He panicked, and he tried to bluff it away, and we are all paying now.
I hope Biden's DOJ and Treasury tries to claw back every single fucking dime spent on his time wasting, his death rallies, and his golf.
