1. Sand storms are incredibly unsettling

I have some crazy pics taken in sandstorms during my deployment to Afghanistan. There is something truly apocalyptic about them, no doubt. The sky was always blood red giving a creepy haze has these winds whipped up the sand that pelted you with tiny rocks and covered you in a fine talc of sand.

2. There have been storms like this in the Phoenix area.

They're called derechos.
