SayItLoud
(1,701 posts)I came to the realization that signs are 20th Century politics. Money is much better spent reaching masses rather than bike riders, dog walkers and a few cars riding by. A sign doesn't change a point of view. A sign is clutter and waste on a planet that has too much of both. Oh, and also these signs tell me where assholes live and to never visit them or buy any of their products, services or food.

(12,368 posts)When I walk in the morning and evening I pass them, and I always accidentally drop my hand held mask so that I bend over and BUTT salute the signage. Makes me feel better.

Washington Post
Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloombergs advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money.
The presidents campaign has long treated the state, which Trump now calls home, as a top priority, and his advisers remain confident in his chances given strong turnout in 2016 and 2018 that gave Republicans narrow winning margins in statewide contests.
Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need, Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey said. Mike believes that by investing in Florida it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.

The Democratic party doesn't need his influence.
The same can be said for the Lincoln Project. I love their ads but don;t want them making policy.
So chalk me up as a satisfied naysayer, I guess?

(22,216 posts)or even down here in Texas. This race is far tighter than anyone ever believed it could be, plus we have some Congressional, judicial and State Legislative races that are leaning Democratic or were flipped last election. Not to mention Cornyn
If Texas goes blue for Biden, he is going to pull a lot of these races with him. Even if #45 squeaks out a win, the Democrats down ballot will benefit.

(43,028 posts)and imagine what covid's done to the underground economy. Yes they keep telling us everything is roaring, but a large part of that is build-out of the covid workplace - home gig computing and cars to avoid public transit. I hear used cars in particular are in short supply and prices are way up.

too many people do not understand FICA/payroll taxes and funding of SS and medicare and when you permanent stop collecting the taxes, the programs will die in less than 2 years as this the backdoor way to end a program. GOP has done similar things all across america

(22,216 posts)We are well past contributing to the fund except for the occasional side gig (like my current work with the Census) but the fund needs that infusion of $$ from current workers to continue to pay us and there will be nothing left for the future retirees.

(54,269 posts)I suspect that Bloomberg will keep an eye on his money making sure that it IS well spent. Not only on campaign aides flying first class, staying at the Four Seasons and eating at 5 star restaurants on his nickel. The Republicans can't figure out why they're behind after spending a billion dollars so far, letting staffers act as if they were the billionaires.
$100 million still won't guarantee that Florida goes for us, especially if Bloomberg is unwilling to engage in the bribery and voter fraud that Republicans consider SOP. However, if it is wisely spent, generating ads in English and Spanish that will register with targeted swing communities, it could well make the difference. Democrats should feel a lot better about Bloomberg contributing $100 million to a campaign than Republicans should feel about Sheldon Adelson contributing $100 million to some campaign, because more of Bloomberg's money will go for the cause to which he donated it--a LOT more. The people of Florida will certainly be better off if it works. The old saying is certainly true: if you want to live like a Republican, vote for a Democrat.
WinstonSmith4740
(3,055 posts)I just hope they spend it right. We all know that Trump is a horrible person...ads aren't necessary to tell us that. I've been saying for a while that advertising is one thing...getting people to the polls is another. These guys, including Steyer, Soros, and whoever else can write big checks, also need to sponsor some sort of transportation to get people to the polls. Rethugs have been closing down polling places to make it more difficult for people to access them, so let's drive them across town if necessary. Run ads encouraging people to check their voter registration so there's no surprise on election day. Demanding a new form of ID? Sponsor a fund that will pay the fees. People standing in line for hours? Here's some folding chairs and water. Trump will have goons at the polls to intimidate people. I'm sure security can be hired on our side to counter them.
We already know Trump will stop at nothing to stay in power. He's ignorant as dirt, but he's not stupid. He knows he's subject to arrest as soon as Biden takes the oath. Sorry, but this not the time to "go high". We're gonna have to be willing to get dirty on this one, because there won't be another if he cheats his way back in.

(11,509 posts)Texas is a purple state and with more investment could be turned blue. People are moving there in droves; over half a million per year, many from California. Beto has been doing excellent work registering voters and I think its a mistake to write off those 38 electoral votes. Granted, the oil and gas industry is deeply entrenched there, however, in Houston for example, there are more workers there in tech and the arts than O&G. I think the general perspective on Texas could use updating.
