My mom, as some of you know from my previous post Tuesday, lost her home late Tuesday in what is now the North Complex West Zone Fire in CA. It was the Bear Fire/North Complex Fire then.
They're heading out to here to live with me in Texas tomorrow morning from Oroville. She's elderly and couldn't make the drive and my brother flew up and is driving them here.
Good wishes/prayers/thoughts they make it here safe and whole are all welcome. My brother and my mom are both high risk for Covid. I'm so worried for them both on this long 3 day journey.
Just keep them in your thoughts, please. ❤️

(19,559 posts)I just want them here and not sick and we can then begin to figure this whole mess out. You know? We already have so very much on our plates, Covid is an unwelcome extra.
My poor mom is so sad already. She truly can't deal with another lawyer now.

(205,161 posts)With all that's already going on right now, this additional blow has to be overwhelming. Kudos to you and your brother for stepping up, your Mom is fortunate to have you to lean on. Just concentrate on one step at a time, the journey first, then dealing with whatever she's up to. And remember to breathe, as a very wise person once said to me...

(19,559 posts)Tiny baby steps. Get her here. Deal with her immediate traumas (she's lost friends to the Fire, then the loss of her home). Make her know she's safe, loved and secure. After that I'm winging it.

Wrapping you all in my arms.

(19,559 posts)My mom has several high risk factors, along with my brother. Then when they get here if anyone caught it, my husband is high risk x2. 3 of my dearest are at high risk from this trip.
They're bringing her car (all she has left) on a long road trip at the worst possible time. It's unavoidable, and terrifying. I hate 2020 with i deep passion.
My love and appreciation to you for your much needed kindness. I'm so overwhelmed right now with all my worries. I needed a touch of kind support.

(3,396 posts)Oroville is a stones throw from a cute little town called Paradise (or, as the idiot in the WH called it, Pleasure) that almost ceased to exist altogether in 2018 because of a massive fire. I went to college in nearby Chico. Its a lovely area.

(19,559 posts)She's extremely fortunate to have a hotel room in Oroville where she evacuated to. They were one of some only 90 people to secure one was the evacuation was issued. My sister owned the day on thst one booking it when mom said they had to leave now. ❤️
Her town might be gone for good. Most of the homes are much like hers and just a slab with ash on the top. It's truly apoplectic to view. Everything is burned from the tall pines down to their homes. In so very many cases there's nothing left. If you didn't know previously there was a home there, you'd not be sure by just looking at the aftermath. I've never seen homes so totally erased before, and this is far from my first wildfire.
The gentleman who was kindly driving about trying to map lost homes for people said when he hit my mom"s house, "it looks like there used to be a home up there due to the driveway and ash." That's all that was left of her 30+ years there. A driveway and ash.

Sadly, there will be many more stories like your moms as GHGs increase to higher levels.

(19,559 posts)I know they'll be diligent, I also know how concerned they are. They're so scared. I went over the scientific data with them both, and I hoped it eased some of their concerns this evening. My heart is just so broken for my mom. I'm trying to be positive for them when we speak.
2020 is the worst year on record in my life. It needs to end soon.
My true appreciation and ❤️ to you for your kindness. It was needed tonight.

(19,559 posts)I always feared this would happen. My mom actually had her place up and was trying to sell and get out of there before it did burn. She just didn't make it.
Covid makes this whole relocating much more risky and frightening then should be necessary. It all just sucks so very badly.

Make sure they get tested as soon as they land, and then get them to a safe and loving home, as I know you will provide.

(14,918 posts)That would be devastating even in ordinary, plague-free times. How much more stressful it must be now! She is fortunate to have such strong and helpful support from you and your brother. Wishing a safe journey to them and a bright new beginning and happier times ahead for your dear mother.

(15,220 posts)There is just SO much to contend with right now. Im so glad you are a buffer for your mom.
Where are you in Texas? Im in SA. Our COVID numbers are dropping but we are (like everywhere) not out of the woods yet.
Be vigilant. Be safe. And find a minute to take care of yourself in all of this. This stress is not healthy for anyone.
