(9,580 posts)My 3rd grade granddaughter said yesterday that she is sorry for the kindergartners and 1st graders, who haven't been able to experience even one or two years of normal school.
I suppose this is the new normal. I am thankful we live in as state with a democratic governor (Andy Beshear, KY), so online school may be a pain, but it sure takes a lot of worry away.
Hang in there, folks.

My kid is older, 6th Grade, and he's doing fine, but he misses the interaction with other kids. Their zoom call is only 1/2 hour.

(15,806 posts)Or- and this is really showing the disparity in education- some people are hiring people for upwards of $115/hr to run the pods for them.
Like my nieces child- hes in a pod with three other kids his age. The kids travel to one house a certain day of the week and a parent runs the pod that day, making sure the kids are all engaged, get exercise, have snacks and do the normal things theyd do.
Kids who parents both have to work and cant afford a person to manage a pod? Their educational experience wont be the same.

Kindergarten should not be heavy duty academics, and unfortunately in this country it has gotten that way in the past few decades.
Actually, look into Montessori. Hopefully you can get materials from them to use with your son. My younger son did Montessori through kindergarten, and I'm sorry I didn't keep him in that program longer.

(13,493 posts)And while I love my daughter's school and they did a great job putting things online.... translating that to an at home atmosphere is nearly impossible for most households. They need a very prepared environment. They need thoughtfulness and observation. And choices of activities.
Zoom calls and classes last year online were better than most other schools around, but my daughter wasn't being kept in it, and with two parents working from home unable to prep the environment, it wasn't as successful as I would have liked.
