'We Weren't Alarmist Enough': Experts Warn Trump And GOP Could Destroy Democracy

When Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt sounded the alarm two years ago that President Donald Trump posed a threat to American democracy, some critics treated their fears as absurd.

“Joe Scarborough ridiculed it on TV, saying, ‘These guys are alarmists,’” Levitsky told HuffPost recently, recalling the MSNBC host’s criticism of “How Democracies Die,” the book the two professors released in early 2018.

“It turns out we weren’t alarmist enough,” Levitsky said.

Over the past two months, with his poll numbers dropping and his reelection in jeopardy, Trump has ramped up the broad assaults on America’s democratic institutions that have defined his presidency. And while some fear what he could do post-election, he’s done plenty beforehand to undermine democracy as a whole.

Turns out it's every bit as bad as we thought it would be. Worse, really. I never anticipated the crazy support he gets from his enablers in Congress. I never anticipated how he would kill so many of us with his inept handling of Covid19. I never thought any president would encourage people to inject bleach into their bodies. I never expected the cruelty to asylum seekers and their children and babies at the border or using federal troops against peaceful protesters.

4. If you look back through time from especially Ronnie's Scam

There was a slow, and at times big up-tick, of Neo-Lib/Libertarianism to the point where the end result had to be what is now occurring. I have had this view for over 20 years. Same with climate change, we are not allowed to do everything we could through Gov. to reverse it. (when USPS wanted to go with electric vehicles years ago Rs stopped it). 7. Since Trump is actually too stupid and too lazy to destroy America, what worries me is that he

has learned that he can do the same thing through indifference. Now, it appears that we are too lazy to do much about it.

10. In my constitutional law class in law school, it was emphasized that Democracy

could be lost via democratic means. Torches and pitchforks (and AK-15s) would not be necessary. Like taking knitting off the needles and pulling the yarns.
