Whistleblowing nurse warns of covid-19 safety neglect at ICE facility
At an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Georgia, covid-19 safety precautions are routinely ignored, while detainees are denied medicine and checkups, a nurse at the facility claims in a federal complaint filed Monday.
Dawn Wooten, who worked full-time at the Irwin County Detention Center until July, outlined her allegations in a complaint filed to the Department of Homeland Securitys Office of Inspector General by a coalition of advocacy groups.
Ms. Wootens whistleblowing disclosures confirm what detained immigrants have been reporting for years: gross disregard for health and safety standards, lack of medical care, and unsanitary living conditions at Irwin, said Priyanka Bhatt, an attorney for Project South, one of the advocacy groups, in a release Monday.
ICE didnt immediately return a message from The Washington Post about the claims. ICE declined to comment in detail on the complaint to the Associated Press, but cast doubt on its use of anonymous testimony from detainees and former detainees to bolster Wootens allegations.
